There are two Diwas (days) in Nepal renowned as Democracy day. One can be”Prajatantra Diwas” which is celebrated on every Falgun 7 & another is”Loktantra Diwas” which is celebrated every Baisakh 11.
Prajatantra Diwas commemorates the dethrone of the Rana dynasty whereas Loktantra Diwas marks the reinstatement of the National Parliament. Both democratic times have equal meaning to the citizens of Nepal as the two days reflect the acceptance of independence & peace in the nation.

After the country Nepal was free of the Rana dynasty, there was an expectation of liberty & peace among the citizens of the country. But again in 2005 King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah took full control of the authorities of the Nepal government & kept the entire control under his rule.
13 years past King Gyanendra’s regime was brought to an end followed by a national wide mass movement epidemic called “Janaandolan II” (Peoples movement II) where more than two dozen of freedom-fighters lost their lives & tens of thousands were wounded.

Then, on April 24 (Baisakh 11, Nepali calendar month), King called the Seven Party Alliance(SPA) & officially reelected the property of representatives. King passed on the power to SPA to ensure the peace, wealth & national motto of the nation. The Seven Party Alliance(SPA) accepted the reinstitution & announced Girija Prasad Koirala as the chief of the new administration.

For many years the Nepalese people have been fighting for freedom and they have achieved a lot. On this day, the happiness of the Nepalese people is celebrated in many different ways.
During the early days of the Nepalese freedom movement, people would observe these traditional and ethnic traditions and at that time they were welcoming the new democracy.
A lot of sacrifices were made by the people at that time and hence there were very low levels of trust between the majority of the people and the Monarchy. However, now since the evolution of Nepalese society and the freedom movement, more changes have taken place.
Today, many Nepalese people no longer have any sense of ethnic and cultural boundaries and they celebrate every day of freedom like every other person. Today Nepal is celebrating freedom and the main motto of this celebration is to build a free nation.
Why democracy day is celebrated yearly on Baisakh 11, I asked a political scientist recently. He replied, “I can tell you this – there are two big reasons for that. One is peace and freedom. The other is a celebration.”
The second reason to celebrate is the sense of achievement and peace we all feel when we see our government and nation making great strides forward for peace and freedom. It is amazing how our elected representatives and people at the grass root level – educate, inform and get out the vote to keep us a free nation.
They understand how important peace and freedom are and it pleases us when we see them making progress. There is a lot of confusion and disillusionment among many citizens about their choices in electing leaders. Some are so frustrated they believe they cannot do anything about it. Yet nothing could be further from the truth!

Think about what freedom means to you. Do you want more of it or less of it? Do you want peace and freedom now or a free society tomorrow? I think you get the drift.
Why democracy day is celebrated every year on the anniversary of our greatest achievements for peace and freedom, which give us the freedoms we have the opportunity to enjoy now and secure for our children and their children?
Today, this peaceful day is commemorated around the world in many different ways. People wear T-shirts, draw pictures of battles and sign candles, while others wear clothing with slogans such as “Think for yourself!”
There is no reason why you should not join in to celebrate this day with your family and friends. You can start by planning a small party with dinner and a movie afterward, as long as you keep it indoors. This will help keep children safe from the elements on this outdoor day, which tends to be very hot and humid in many areas of the world.
There are many different ways you can commemorate the historic day; you can dress up as one of the victorious fighters and bake some cookies or cupcakes. You could also decorate your yard with wreaths and ribbons so that your guests can have something to bring home.
When people reflect on why democracy day is celebrated on the 8th anniversary of the Agincourt victory, they realize that it is important to maintain freedom and a healthy constitutional system. The day can also promote peace by showing how much freedom people have enjoyed over time.
Freedom is what makes Nepal stands out as one of the most successful and progressive countries in the world. Everyone should take time out to celebrate Loktantra Day and all that it stands for.
