  1. Betana wetland

Betana wetlands area is a serene wetland that is a popular picnic spot in eastern Nepal which is two kilometers from Belbari. Located in the north of the Mahendra highway, it is surrounded by green forests of the tall sal tree that fascinates anyone visiting here.

The wetland is home to several species of turtles, fish, birds and a collection of flora and fauna. It is known for the peaceful environment. In addition to the Betana forest, which spans 174.91 hectares, the region also includes an additional 16 percent wetland. 98 percent have been occupied by the forest while 6 percent of the forest is infertile.

  1. Wetlands in the Royal Chitwan National Park

The wetlands are located in the districts of Chitawan and Nawalparasi, in the inner Terai of central-southern Nepal, 120 km southwest of Kathmandu. The area covered by the National Park is 93,200 ha; as the area of wetland area is unknown.

The wetlands within the Royal Chitwan National Park on the alluvial plains of the Rapti, Reu and Narayani rivers. Wetland habitats include wide and shallow rivers with extensive pebble banks and many sandy islands, riverine forests and seasonally flooded meadows, and several small oxen lakes and associated swamps formed by frequent changes in river channels.

Both the Rapti and the Reu flow west to Narayani, which drains south to the Ganges. The Rapti forms the northern boundary of the eastern portion of the park, and the Narayani forms the western boundary.

The four main lakes are Devi Tal (120 ha), Manna Tal (100 ha), Tammer Tal (25 ha) and Lame Tal; all are shallow and permanent freshwater lakes with lush growth of aquatic vegetation.

Most lakes are almost covered by the water hyacinth Lantana camara. The tall grassland, up to eight meters high, and the riverine forest form a mosaic along the banks of the river, and are maintained by seasonal flooding. Several types of grassland have been identified.

The climactic vegetation of the Inner Terai is the sal forest (Shorea robusta), which covers 70% of the park. Rivers and lakes are rich in amphibians and fish. Some 62 species of fish have recorded in Narayani, including Tor tor, T. putitora, Barilius spp and Puntius spp.

The wetlands are home to a large population of Marsh Crocodile or Mugger Crocodylus palustris (about 200 individuals in 1978), and the Narayani River has one of the largest surviving populations in the world endangered Gharial Gavialis gangeticus (about 50 adults in 1982) .

Other reptiles include about 19 species of snakes, Varanus spp of monitor lizards and freshwater turtles. Rivers and oxbow lakes are very important as breeding, wintering and staging areas for a wide variety of waterfowl.

  1. Tilicho Lake

Lake Tilicho (4919m) is one of the highest Himalayan wetlands in the in Nepal. A glacial lake with its source at Thorang La peak (6144 m), Tilicho is considered an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Hindus.

Tilicho lake is rich in excellent views of mountains, lakes, rivers, deeper valleys and biological diversity that varies from subtropical and alpine. On its surface, one can regularly observe ice cut off from the ice sheet.

  1. Gaidhawa Tal

It is located in the southern lowlands (terai) near the Indian border, west of Bhairahawa, Lumbini Zone. It is a small freshwater lake and associated swamps in the terai near the border with India.

Its climatic condition is described as tropical monsoon climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 1,400 mm, a maximum temperature of approximately 35 ° C and a minimum temperature of approximately 10 ° C.

Most of the precipitation falls between mid-June and the late September. It is believed to be an important wintering area for waterfowl. In January 1980, Underwood observed 57 Mycteria leucocephala, 20 Platalea leucorodia and 20 Sarkidiornis melanotos in the lake and all these three species are rare in Nepal.

  1. Taltalaiya wetland

Taltalaiya wetland is situated in Itahari municipality ward no. 2 & 3 of Sunsari district at an altitude of 120m. The wetand consists of 12 ponds, some of the ponds are manmade for recreational and irrigation purposes.

It has been managed by Tal Talaiya Conservation and Development committee. Awareness raising training to local User’s group about the legal provisions and the Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare guidelines prepared by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is needed.

  1. Batula Tal

It is located in ward no.9 of Ramaroshan VDC of Achham district. The major aquatic plants found in core area Cynodon dactylon, Pyrus persia, Equisetum arvense. The major plants found in basin are Rhododendron arboretum, Quercus semecarpifolia.

The fish found in this area is Fish Schizothorax sp. The birds found in this wetland are Tragopan satyra, Pucrasia marcolopha, Lophophorus impejanus,Lophura leucomelanos, Anas platyrhynchos etc. The mammals found in this wetland are Ochotona himalayana, Lepus  nigricollis, Panthera pardus, Canis aureus, Lutra lutra, Martes flavigula, Naemorhedus goral.

  1. Geraya Bonda

It is situated in Ramaroshan vdc ward no.7 in Accham district. The Boundary core area is surrounded by Forest in all directions. It is surrounded by Suni Ban in west; Geraya in East; Kadh in South, Hade Kadh in North.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Pyrus persia, Acoruscalamus and Salix sps. The major  plants found in basin are Rhoodendron sps, Myrica sps, Alnus nepalensis, Pinus roxburgii, Ptrus pashia and Prunus cerasoides.

The fish found in this wetland is Garra gotyla. The birds found in wetland are Francolinus francolinus (Kalo Titra), Lophura leucomelanus (Kalij), Megalaimavirens (Nyauli), Eudynamysscolopacea (Koeli) etc. The mammals found are Lepus nigricollis (Bankharayo), Lutra lutra (Oont; EN:

It is situated in ward no. 9 of Ramaroshan VDC of Achham district. As the core area of  wetland is surrounded by forest in all directions. The basin area is surrounded by Mujede-Dhanesalla-Ramaroshan trail in west, Dense mixed forest in east and north, Mujeda-Rupsa trail in south.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Nelumbo nucifera (Nilo Kamal),

Equisetum arvense (Talche Jhar), Rumex nepalensis (Halhale), Ceratophylum  submersum (Panijhar). The major plants found in basin are Rhododenron arboretum (Gurans), Quercussemecarpifolia (Khasru), Lyonia villosa (Angeri). The fish found in this area is Schizothoraz sps (Asala).

As, the basin area is bounded with Seudi Bazar in west, Patan-8, Bhauneli-9 in east, Jeude tol in south, Tadi village-6 and Guwane-1,2,3 in north.

The mojor plants in basin include Pinus roxburghii (Salla), Terminalia alata (Saaj), Bischofia javanica (Kaini), Quercus leucrotrichophora (Baanjh) and Butea sps (Palansh) etc.

The fish found in this wetland is Channa stewartii. The birds found in this area are Great barbet (Nyauli), Francolinus francolins ( Titra), Lophura leucomelanos (Kalij),  Urocissa erythrorhyncha (Laampuchhre).

The mammals found in this wetland is  Muntiacus muntjak (Barking deer), Pardofelis nebulosa (Leopard), Sus scrofa (Wild  boar), Canis aureus (Fox).

  1. Dau tal

This wetland is situated in ward no. 2,3 of Surma VDC of Bajhang district. The core area  of wetland is surrounded by Dungra village in west, Bhirkot village in east, Khaula  school in south and Hila in north. The Basin area is surrounded by Alka village in west,  Bhirkot in east, Khaula school in south and Afra khola in north.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Eichhornia crassipes (Water hyacinth).

The major plants found in basins of wetland are Juglans regia (Oil and fruits, timber),  Pyracantha crenulata (Khasru), Prinsepia utilits (Dhatelo), Prunus perscia (Peach).

The fish found in this wetland is Channa stewartii. The birds found in this wetland are  Streptopelia decaocto (Eurasian collared dove), Sarcogyps calvus (Red headed vulture),  Falco tinnunculus (Common kestrel), Lophura leucomelanus (Kalij Pheasant),  Phalacrocorax carbo (Great Cormorant). The mammals found in this wetland are Myotis sicarius (Mouse eared Bat), Hystrix indica (Porcupine), Felis Chaus( Jungle cat).

  1. Chhede Daha

This wetland is situated in ward no. 7.9 of Atichaur and Gudukhati VDC of Bajura  District. The boundary of the core area is temple in east, forest in south and west and  farm land in north. The basin area is surrounded by Patna pani in west, Simkatna Danda  in east, Dakundeli Danda in south, Ratakali Danda in north.

The major aquatic plants in core area is Equisetum arvense (Talche jhar). The major  plants found in basin are Rhododendron sps (Gurans), Alnus nepalensis (Utis), Berberis  aristata (Chutro), Pyracantha crenulata (Ghangaru). The fish found in this wetland is  Garra gotyla.

The birds found in this wetland are Francolinus francolinus (Black  Francolin), Lophura leucomelanos (Kalij Pheasant), Tadorna ferruginea (Ruddy  shelduck), Neophron percnopterus (Egyptian vulture) etc.

  1. Dhalpuri Pokhari

This wetland is situated in ward no. 3 of Kailashmandu VDC of Bajura  District. The boundary of core area is Badimalika trail in the north and west, forest in  the east and south. The Basin area is surrounded by Chiru Tala in west, Motipani in  east, Bajaso Ghadi in south and Kaltare Danda in north.

The major aquatic plants found in core area is Rumex nepalensis. The major plants in  basin are Rhododendron arboretum (Gurans), Quercus semecarpifolia (Khasru), Lyonia  ovalifolia (Angeri), Pinus wallichiana (Gobre salla).

The birds found in wetland are  Tragopan satyr (Satyr tragopan), Lophura leucomelanos (Kalij Pheasant), Sitta  himalayensis (White tailed Nuthatch), Milvus migrans (Black Kite), Heterophasia  capistiata (Rufous sibia) etc.

The mammals found in this wetland are Malvis flavigula  (Yellow throated martin), Canis aureus (Golden jackal), Ursus thibetanus (Asiatic Black  bear), Felis Bengalensis ( Leopard cat) etc.

  1. Ali tal

This wetland is situated in ward no. 4 of Ali tal VDC of Dadeldhura District. The  boundary of core are is Asigram community forest in west, Raksun village in east and  south, Bhimiraj community forest in north.

The basin area is surrounded by Chanala  village in west, Bhotyaula in east, dadele in south and chaud mamur in north.

The major aqautic plants found in core area are Eichhomia crassipes (Water hyacinth),  Sphagnum nepalensis (Jhyau). The major plants found in basin are Shorea robusta (Sal),  Pinus roxburghii (Salla), Terminalia alata (Saaj), Mallotus philipensis (Rohini),  Buchanania latifolia (Gaayo).   1. Chhatiwan tal

This tal is situated in wardno. 3 of chhatiwan VDC of Doti district. The boundary of core  area is farmland in east and forest in all directions. The basin area is surrounded by  Pote Bonda in west, Ritha gaun in east, Tomdek danda in north and Bodar to jarayal  trail in south.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Acorus calamus (Bojho),  Colocasia sps (Elephant ear), Rumex nipanesis (Nepal dock).

The major plants found in  basin are Pinus rusburghii (Rani salla), Alnus nepalensis, Sapium sps (Tallow tree). The  fish found in this lake is Garra gotyla. The birds found in this wetland are Francolinus  francolinus (Kalo Titra), Lophura leucomelanos (Kalij Pheasant), Urocissa  erythrorhyncha (Red/billed blue magpie) etc.

This tal is situated in chatiwan VDC ward no. 1 of Doti district. The boundary of the core  area is grassland in all directions. The basin area is surrounded by Millchaura Bazar in  west, pine forest hill in east, Kailali- Doti highway in north and private pine forest in  south.

The major plants found in basin are Pinus roxburgii (Rani sallo), Schima walichi (Chilaune), Sapium sps (Tallow tree) and Pyrus pashia (Mayal). The birds found in this  area are Francolinu francolinus (Black Francolin), Lophura leucomelanos (Kalij  Pheasant), Megalaima asiatica (Blue/throated barbet), Eudynamys scolopacea (Asian  Koel), Vanellus indicus (Red/ wattled lapwing) etc.

This wetland is situated in Dibrung vdc ward no.2 of Gulmi district. The boundary of core  area are settlement/outlet in east, settlement in south with agriculture land in west and  settlement in northen direction. The basin area is surrounded by forest in north,  shantipur road in east and settlement in south and forest in west.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Rumex hastatus (Halhale), Sphagnum  nepalensis (Jhyau), Centella asiatica etc. The major plants found in basin are Quercus  semecarpifolia (Khasru), Centella asiatica (Ghodtapre), Plantago sp (Jibre saag),  Taraxacum officinale (Tuki phool).   1. Timure pokhari

It is located in Shantipur VDC ward no.9 of Gulmi district. The boundary of core area is Timure lake and   grass land in east, Agriculture land in south, Bushy land in west, Bushy and Forest in Northern direction.

The basin area is surrounded by Bhanjyang trail in north, Shantipur remi road in east, Gehhung in south  and Kisikot in west.

The lake is situated in Shankarpur VDC ward no.3 in Kanchanpur district. The core area is  surrounded by Kanjagaon to Kasawa trail in north and south, farmland in east and west.  The basin area is surrounded by Kharrakhola in north, DOdanadi in west, Kanjagau road  in south and Kanjagau communitty forest in east.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Blue lotus, Jhyau. The major plants  found in basin are Khayar, Sisoo, Sal, Amala etc. The fish found in this lake are Carp and  Carassius carassius.

This wetland is situated in Betkot municipality ward no.6 in Kanchanpur district. The core area is bounded by forest in all directions. TThe basin area is surrounded by Churechaunkham forest in east, Chunepani forest in west, Shikharpani forest in north and Ganesh community forest in south.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are water lettuce, Typhaangustifolia. The major plants found in basin are Sal, Jamun, Asna, Bhalayo, Sindure, Gittha, Bhorla, Rajbriksha etc.

This tal is situated in Ramarishan VDC ward no-9 in Achham district. The core area is surrounded by forest in all directions. The basin area is surrounded by forest in all direction as well Mujeda-Rupsa trail in south.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Dubo, Ekpate Kamal, Pirejhar etc. The major plants found in basin are Gurans, Khasru, Angeri, Dabdabe, Gobre Sallo, Ghangaru, Chutro etc.

The major aquatic plants found in core area are Pater, Blue Lotus, Jhyau etc. The major plants found in basin are Khyar, Sisoo, Sal, Jamun, Haldo, Amala etc.

The birds found in this wetland are Great Egret, Yellow-cheeked Tit, Red-wattled lapwing, Common Kestrel etc. The mammals found in this wetland are Leopard car, Common Otter, Rhesus Monkey, Jungle cat, Squirrel etc.
