in Travels
A A

Is Nantucket on your list of dream vacation destinations this year? Well, you are not alone since this island sees thousands of new visitors all year round.

Nantucket lies 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and is accessible by plane or ferry. It is increasingly becoming a vacation destination of choice due to its stunning beaches and natural landscapes. The elbow-shaped island is also loved for its lively shopping scene, great restaurants, seaside charm, lighthouses, and preserved historic buildings.

Charming Island of Nantucket

Though the best time to visit Nantucket is usually in the summer, you can plan your vacation to this destination any time of the year. And you’ll always have things to do here. Whether you plan to explore downtown Nantucket or sample local cuisine, here are tips for a memorable vacation.

1.   Book Your Accommodation in Advance

The good thing about making early reservations for your accommodation is that you get what you want. It’s an excellent opportunity to make the most of discounts and special offers. Early reservation also gives you ample time to prepare and saves you money.

Your accommodation options on the island will vary depending on your tastes. If you want to live like a local and enjoy a home-away-from-home experience, consider a Nantucket rental in ‘Sconset.

‘Sconset has a charming way of making visitors feel at home. With all the luxury the accommodation facilities provide, you’ll want to visit again. Each day in this neighborhood allows you to experience local culture and explore new sights.

A designated town in Nantucket, Sconset features spectacular landscapes and is home to the wealthy. When living in this neighborhood, you can view the island’s steepest cliffs from Sankaty Light Head.

2.   Experience the ‘Sconset Bluff Walk

A trip to Nantucket is incomplete without the scenic stroll on ‘Sconset Bluff Walk. The Bluff Walk is a popular attraction in the small village of Sconset. It is a public footpath that stretches behind private houses and is close to the east shore bluffs.

While there are currently no parking spots at the Bluff Walk, you can still park your vehicle in the accessible parking spaces in town. Whichever means you use to get there, note that the views are fantastic.

Walking on the ‘Sconset Bluff Walk is a chance to explore the endless ocean scenery and catch a glimpse of the towering bluffs. Besides being a magnet for tourists and locals, the trail is part of the community’s identity.

Other than the spectacular ocean view, manicured backyards and tree covers, you’ll also encounter birds, flowers, and plenty of places to rest along the way.

Nearby is the famous golf course of Sankaty Head Golf Club.

3.   Take a Stroll on Main Street

The round, uneven cobblestones plastered on Nantucket’s Main Street will have you reminiscing the past. Whether you are trailing the street by car, bicycle, or foot, the pavers make the stroll more scenic.

As you stroll Main Street, you’ll encounter Greek Revival mansions with tree shades and Church spires. Expect to encounter dozens of sidewalk benches and a waterfront on this magnificent street.

While staying at ‘Sconset, you can reach downtown Nantucket by bus, car, or taxi. A bus ride takes about 30 minutes, while a car ride and a taxi take 16 minutes.

One of the highlights of Main Street is Murray’s Toggery Shop, which offers a department store feel with a warm, small-town approach. The family-owned and operated shop has been in business for 68 years, keeping families dressed all year.

4.   Visit the Whaling Museum

It is a historical landmark run by the Nantucket Historical Association. The museum provides guests with the perfect blend of modern design, tradition, and history. Its climate-controlled space houses a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton, priceless artifacts, and elegant art.

Since its restoration in 2005, the museum has featured a program space and an exhibit connecting the 1971 Peter Foulger Museum and the 1847 Hadwen & Barney Oil and Candle Factory.

The exhibit spaces and galleries feature art and artifacts related to Nantucket’s culture and past life. At the same time, the Hadwen & Barney Oil and Candle Factory, characterized by a massive lever press, is considered an industrial site where the sophisticated process of making spermaceti candles and refining oil is explained.

5.   Enjoy the Blue Crab Fried Rice at The Nautilus

The Nautilus is an eatery in Nantucket known for its Asian-inspired seafood offerings made with locally-sourced ingredients. It has a balanced focus on plenty of food items, wine, and cocktails.

The restaurant’s menu features a mix of small plates of comfort food. One of its popular food items is the blue crab fried rice served with scallions, Thai dipping sauce, and farm egg.

Since there’s so much variety on The Nautilus’ menu, you’ll want to come with a few friends to this eatery. Make your reservations early since this joint is usually in demand in the high peak season.

6.   Don’t Miss the Water Activities that Nantucket Offers

Since magnificent beaches and waters surround Nantucket, it offers endless opportunities for waterborne adventures. There’s something for everyone, from sailing to fishing, harbor cruises, and surfing. Here are some water activities you may consider engaging in

  • Kayaking: The island offers safe and convenient kayaking opportunities, whether you are a beginner or an expert. For beginners, Nantucket Harbor is a great place to start. Other top kayaking spots include Long Pond, Sesachacha Pond, and Coskata Pond.
  • Surfing: Nothing beats the thrill of a wipe-out in an ocean wave. With over 80 miles of beaches, Nantucket offers unlimited surfing adventures. If you are new to this water sport, you can sign up for surfing classes.
  • Cruises and sailing: Depending on the water vessel and its amenities, cruising and sailing experiences on the island vary. There are also plenty of companies that facilitate this activity for families, couples, and solo travelers.
  • Kiteboarding: Nantucket is one of the best places in the country to learn and develop kiteboarding skills.
  • Wakeboarding and tubing: Get your group or family on a boat tour of the island and learn to wakeboard.

The Takeaway

Nantucket is a top-rated vacation destination with plenty of attractions and vacation opportunities for travelers. A visit to this island is quite memorable if you plan adequately. Moreover, utilize the tips discussed above to explore Nantucket’s offerings best.
