What Time is It Now?

It’s spring, which means that the time of year has become summer, and the English language is only just starting to change its emphasis back from spring to autumn. Summer for Americans means Halloween for many of us, but for our fellow Nepalese who live in the colder climates of this landlocked country, it’s still a time of dread for another round of April holidays. Here is what time is it in Nepal today:

-Nepal time is fifteen minutes ahead of India. If it’s now 2 PM in India, then time in Nepal is 2.15. That’s when the sun is at its hottest. The sky is a glorious blue. It’s also about to begin a new season of change. A new moon will rise and it’ll be full after two hours.

-Nepal time runs from midnight to three in the afternoon. That’s the time when the sun is just above the treetops and it’ll be getting higher. By the time the bus comes, it’s going to be a little before one o’clock. That’s also the exact time that the bus leaves the airport and it drops you off at the edge of the valley where the bus lands is a high place with a view of the Himalayas. If it rains, that’s going to be before four in the afternoon.

-Nepal time runs from four to five in the afternoon. That’s a normal day. If the sky were to open up with a real rainbow and there was actually a sundae on the dessert table, then that time would be three o’clock in the afternoon. If you were to observe it carefully, you’d see that the sun has risen high enough so the sundae is fully above the dessert. That’s an easy reference for “What time is it now?”

Now, you may be asking, “What time is it exactly if the sun is rising or setting on the earth at the exact same moment?” That’s because it varies from place to place and the clock that you’re using can only tell you the correct time. For a second, let me try to explain what happens if the sun is shining on the earth at two specific times, in exact positions. I’ll give you one of these times, and then another question:

-What time is it now, if the sun is shining on the earth at two specific times, at exactly the same position? -What time is it now, if the earth is moving at the exact speed of the sun’s radiation? -What time is it now, if the earth is spinning at the exact speed of the sun’s radiation? -What time is it now, if both of these things are true?

-How can I tell when the earth is moving east or west by dialing a landline or a satellite phone number? -How can I tell when the sun is shining on the earth by dialing a satellite phone or a land line? -How do I know what time it is in London, California, or Paris when I’m sleeping in New York City?

These are the basic questions that you can use as clues to help you find the right answer “What time is it?” When you answer these questions by using a GPS or a satellite phone receiver, you’ll be able to go about your daily life knowing exactly how long “It’s midnight in New York” or “It’s 2:30 a.m. in Los Angeles.” No more guessing what time the clock is going to strike!
