Tihar is the national second religious festival of Nepal. Deepawali is celebrating a 5 days long duration. Tihar is also known as Diwali or Dipawali or Deepavali or Shukhratri in Nepal. It is the second most auspicious festival in the Nepali annual Calendar.
Dipawali is celebrated by Hindus of all castes and citizens of Nepal, even they are in out of the country. Tihar is the second longest festival celebrated by Nepali Hindu people.
According to Nepali Bikram Samvat Calendar, Tihar festival falls around the month of Kartik – Mangsir or say, October – November. Tihar starts from the black fortnight and ends on the day of full black night.
The main theme of the Nepali Tihar festvial is the conquest of worshiping goddess Laxmi Mata and exchanging love and happiness between the brothers and sisters.
On Kaag Tihar, the first day of Tihar festival, the day of worshiping crows, there is a colourful procession worshiping the crows in the Nepali homes.
The following day, Kukur Tihar (2nd Day of Tihar), Dog is worshiped.
Third day of the Tihar festival, Laxmi Puja, the main day is Laxmi Puja day, worshiping the Goddess Lakshami, goddess of wealth.
The fourth day of the Tihar festival, Govardhan Puja, the day of worshiping the ox. In this day, Mha puja is also celebrated in the Newar culture.
The fifth day of the Tihar festival, Bhai Tika; sisters pray for brothers’ happiness.
