Ubhauli (उभौली) Festival in Nepal is a festival. Ubhauli (उभौली) Festival in is also called Sakela Ubhauli. Sakala Ubhauli is a huge celebration in the Kirant community. Uhaul Parba is a festival of the Kirat community of Nepal. This festival is celebrated every year during this season marking the migration phase upwards to hilly regions when the summer season arrives. The migration from hills downwards to low altitude is called Udhauli (Downwards) which is also an annual festival of the community. Sakala is such a dance performed during the Ubhauli festival. There is Udhauli Parba and Ubhauuli Parba festival in Nepal.

The Rai community celebrates this festival. It is celebrated twice a year as Ubhauli (going up) and Udhauli (going down). It is generally accepted that the naming comes from the migration patterns of birds. This festival is celebrated as Chandi dance, Sakewa, Baishakhe, and wandangme depending upon different cultures in the Rai community.

Uhaul is celebrated in Kartik or Mangsir and Ubhauli is celebrated around Baishakh and Jestha. The Rai community worships nature twice a year before planting and harvesting. This worships is called Sakewa /Sakala. The Sakala celebration is a prayer to mother nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities. Therefore, the festival is also known as “Bhumi Puja” starting on Baishakh Purnima, Sakela Unbhauli is celebrated for 15″ days in Baishakh marking the beginning of the farming year. On Mangsir / Shuklapurnima again, they perform Udhauli. They worship Sumnima, and Paruhang (Shiva, Parbati), and perform Chandinach on the occasion. They dance play Dhol-Jhyamta, eat delicious dishes, and have fun. In addition to this, there are several festivals – Buddha Jayanti, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Baisakhi of the Sikh community, Mahabir Jayanti of the Jain community, etc. celebrated in Nepal with great zeal and fun.

The date of the Ubhauli Festival festival falls in April or May (Baisakh – Jyestha) each year, depending on the cycle of the moon. It falls on the Baisakh, the first month of the Hindu calendar. The Ubhauli Parba festival celebration runs for one day. Ubhauli Parba  2017 will be on 14 May. According to Nepali Calendar, Ubhauli Parva  2074 will be Baisakh 31.
