We have tried something about status of protected areas in Nepal. Nepal occupies the central part of the Himalayas between the Indomalaya and Palearctic ecozones. In altitude ranges it consists Kechanagal, Jhapa in the south-eastern Terai from 67 meter above sea level to 8,848 meter at Mount Everest (Sagarmatha).

There are 1,120 species of non-flowering plants, 5,160 species of flowering plants, 635 species of butterfly, 185 species of freshwater fish, 43 species of amphibian, 100 species of reptile, 11 different types of bio-climatic zones, 844 species of birds, 181 species of mammal, 36 different types of vegetation etc in Nepal. Government of Nepal has established a network of 17 protected areas of Nepal since 1973 AD for the recognition of magnitude of biodiversity of Nepal.

While talking about status of protected areas in Nepal, we should talk about that there are 10 national parks, 3 wildlife reserves, 3 conservation areas and 1 hunting reserves in the protected area in Nepal. But additionally there are 3 more protected areas in Ramsar sites which are declared in 2003 AD.

List of Protected areas of Nepal can be categorized into the following types:

Protected areas from National Parks: National parks, the area set aside for the conservation and management of the natural environment consisting wild animals, plants and landscapes together with their utilization, are the protected area.

1. Chitwan National Park – 932 km²
2. Sagarmatha National Park – 1,148 km²
3. Langtang National Park – 1,710 km²
4. Rara National Park – 106 km²
5. Khaptad National Park – 225 km²
6. Shey Phoksundo National Park – 3,555 km²
7. Bardiya National Park – 968 km²
8. Makalu Barun National Park – 1,500 km²
9. Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park – 159 km²
10. Banke National Park – 550 km²

Protected areas from Wildlife Reserve:-  Wildlife Reserve area, the area set aside for the conservation and management of wildlife resources and their habitat, are the protected area.

11. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve – 175 km²
12. Parsa Wildlife Reserve – 499 km²
13. Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve – 305 km²

Protected areas from Hunting Reserve: Hunting Reserve, the area set aside for conservation and management of wildlife to provide hunting for legal hunters, are the protected area.

14. Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve – 1,325 km²

Protected areas from Conservation Area: Conservation Area, the area set aside for the conservation of the natural environment and the natural resources for its utilization, are the protected area.

• 15. Annapurna Conservation Area – 7,629 km²
• 16. Kanchenjunga Conservation Area – 2,035 km²
• 17. Makalu-Barun conservation area -1,500;km²

Protected areas from Ramsar Sites: Ramsar Sites, the area set aside for the conservation and management of Natural environment consisting watershed, animals, plants and landscapes together with their utilization, are the protected area. 3 more protected areas in Ramsar sites are declared as protected area in Nepal in 2003 AD.
