For centuries, it has been widely believed that a lunar New Year is followed by festivities and festivals marking the return of good luck. In some cultures, this coincides with the actual commencement of the Hindu calendar.
The first day of a new year varies across cultures. Many Nepalese cultures observe the first day of the new year by abstaining from food and drink for seven days.

The rich offer prayers to the Hindu gods and goddesses. This is followed by the ringing of bells, pouring of water and other fireworks. Many homes display exquisite carpets, wall hangings and wall paintings with pictures of the Hindu gods and goddesses.

Music and dance are common on this occasion. People visit temples, celebrate Diwali with songs and dances and go around the streets in vehicles. Fireworks and large stones are also used during this period. The markets are crowded with stalls offering a variety of items. Popular Hindu foods are Vada Pav, Anjir Rolls and Samosas.

Many events are planned all over the city during the last week of the Nepali New Year. There are many fireworks show at the Kathmandu, Nepal.
