A lunar New Year occurs every four years and differs slightly from the traditional Gregorian calendar. The new year occurs after the last New Year celebrated by the Gregorian calendar. For centuries, it has been widely believed that a lunar New Year is followed by festivities and festivals marking the return of good luck. In some cultures, this coincides with the actual commencement of the Hindu calendar.

The first day of a new year varies across cultures. Many Nepalese cultures observe the first day of the new year by abstaining from food and drink for seven days.

On the first day, the family performs some group rituals such as a community meal or a pull. Relatives and friends attend this ceremonial gathering, and celebrations are arranged around a fire. The first meals are cooked using milk, butter, or ghee, and later on, milk substitutes are made.

In Chinese culture, the beginning of the new year is also celebrated by the dragon boat festival. In the Chinese lunar calendar, the spring equinox is considered the start of the new year.

The festival celebrated by the Nepalese is associated with the myth of the Basant seaso. Legend has it that the god of water turned into a monster due to a mischievous act. To appease the angry god, a waterslide was built to cross the flooded lands and was succeeded by the sturdy crane.
