The most powerful key to promoting Nepali products in the global market is the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA). This social organization should play the role of mediator or say the role of the bridge.

Now, the NRNA’s president is Jiba Lamichhane. He should step first to help in the promotion of Nepali products in the global market available easily. how to promote the Nepali products in the global market? It’s the main question to all Nepali products lover, producers, marketers, and even customers.

To promote Nepali products in the international market, NRNA can play a vital role. NRNA President Jiba Lamichhane said, “However, we can play the role of a mediator in promoting Nepali products,” Lamichhane added, “NRNA can play an effective role to bridge the promotional campaign of Nepali products despite the association’s limited resources”

Promote Nepali Products in the Global Market

Although, NRNs have already been helping individuals who were constantly promoting Nepali products in the international market.

NRNA can play this role with the help of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI). NRNA can’t play a vital role with FNCCI.  Now Suraj Vaidya is the president of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).

Nepali products will garner a good reputation only if branding is carried out after properly studying the international market.

Challenges of promoting Nepali products in the global market

One of the most challenging aspects of promoting Nepali products in the global marketplace is the lack of adequate export infrastructure. In addition, Nepali goods are not taking full advantage of digital trade, which accounts for around 12 percent of international trade. E-commerce enables countries to sell directly to consumers, allowing them to earn the value they create. However, Nepal is not connected to the international payment system, which prevents it from selling its products online.

The government’s tightening of controls on media and non-governmental organizations has hampered the creation of a vibrant Nepali product market. The government has a tendency to intervene and has interfered in the business of individual companies. This is a problem that the new GON must resolve, as it is unlikely to make the same mistakes that the previous government did.

Furthermore, Nepal’s geographic location poses other challenges. Lack of access to a seaport and mountainous terrain raise transportation costs, and the nearest seaport is in Kolkata, India.

Regulatory frameworks are not transparent and inconsistent. In addition, government officials often rely on personal relationships in order to grant contracts to foreign companies. Companies that export ninety percent of their products are exempt from sales taxes, excise duties, and customs charges. Still, Nepal faces major challenges in promoting trade, including a lack of skilled labor, a lack of advanced technology, geographical accessibility and a high import duty rate (140 percent).

While many potential buyer countries are imposing increasingly strict sanitary and phytosanitary laws, Nepal is lacking in the capacity to produce and export the products that can be sold in their markets. This means that a number of exporters have benefited from the low tariffs that India has placed on Nepali products. However, it is important to note that Nepal has a long way to go before it is able to compete in the global value chain.

Due to lack of infrastructure and markets, Nepal is heavily dependent on Indian routes to export its products. This means that it is unable to compete with cheaper Chinese and Indian products. However, this has not deterred Nepal from importing U.S. goods, which now account for ten percent of the total market. A key factor in Nepal’s export strategy is the availability of cheap seeds. Since Nepal has only one land route, it is crucial for the U.S. to export these crops to India.

The economy is still highly dependent on agriculture, and the country’s median age is only 24 years old. More than half of the population is under 25, meaning that the ratio of working to non-working people will remain high for many years to come. If Nepal’s economy continues to develop as expected, Nepal will continue to export goods and services to the rest of the world.

While exports help Nepal to improve its status in the world, the trade deficit is a key factor in the country’s overall economic situation. It is therefore imperative to make trade policies aimed at improving Nepal’s balance of payments.

Exports of Nepali handicrafts

The pandemic has affected the world economy. Although most handicrafts exported from Nepal have declined, demand for felt products has continued to grow in the domestic market. The recent Covid-19 pandemic has had minimal impact on demand for Nepali felt products, according to trade associations. However, the market for these products is still very small. This fact makes it crucial for Nepal to develop the domestic market.

The antiquity of the handicraft industry in Nepal is reflected in its variety and the intricate details it contains. Various gods, including Buddha, are depicted in centuries-old forms. Other examples of Nepali handicrafts include artistic metal-carved pearls, wood carving, stone-carved sculptures, and inlays. Handmade woolen carpets and Thanka ready-made garments are examples of the exquisite work of Nepali artisans.

As far as the history of Nepali handicrafts is concerned, their creation dates back to the Stone Age, when human beings were unable to make or use tools. In the 5th century AD, different religions erupted in Nepal and their influence can be observed in handicrafts. Besides, Nordic Aryans, which mixed Mongolian groups, introduced handicrafts to Nepal. Throughout the centuries, Nepal has adapted both Buddhist and Hindu concepts to the tastes of the global marketplace.

In addition to these products, Nepal is also known for its hemp weaving industry. Hemp fibers are sustainable and biodegradable, and Nepal uses these natural fibers to create a variety of interesting products, including bags, notebooks, calendars, and lampshades. Handmade paper products are made by craftsmen and can be found in many shops throughout the country. The products are also made into various accessories, from jewelry to hats.

Government support is necessary to develop the handicraft industry. Cash incentives are an incentive to the people to engage in the business and reduce the cost of production. Tax exemptions for handicraft producers can also help to encourage entrepreneurs. Currently, the government provides a two percent grant to producers, but there is no incentive for entrepreneurs to participate in international trade fairs. In FY 2017/18, the U.S. was Nepal’s second-largest export market after India. The country recorded a trade deficit of $11.1 billion in FY 2017/18, which is almost three percent of its total GDP. The United States accounted for a large part of Nepal’s imports, especially in the area of handicrafts, as well as other products, including carpets and woolen materials.
