Who Started Gai Jatra In Nepal
The history of Nepal is rich and very interesting. The history has shown that the ancient Kings were more intellectual than the degree holder political leaders of present time.
The ancient rulers had done better things for their citizens in comparison to the modern day. Like the starting of the festival named Gai Jatra.

Initially Kathmandu valley used to be one big country. But later the valley was divided into lalitpur, kirtipur, bhaktapur and Kantipur.
Kantipur was then reigned by the King named Pratap Malla of Malla Dynasty.

It was at the year of 1641 A.D.He was the ninth king at the time. He was a very literary and the artistic person. The great architectural land marks are his creation.
Though they are more or less the making of his own sculptures and statues. The main contribution of his is the buliding of the artificial pond called Rani Pokhari(Pond of the Queen).

It was created to console his Queen who was going through a sad phase due to death of her son.
But even Rani Pokhari couldn’t console her. So the king gave the order to the people of his nation. Those families which had gone through the same suffering as the queen had.

Those who had a death in their family within a year. They were ordered to bring the carnival of cows and children on the street.
The main goal of the king was to show the Queen that there were others too who had death in their family.

The queen was consoled. The people were happy. The situation was a win win. Since the cow was and is considered to be the holy creature.
People used to have lots of cows at the time. So king ordered todecorate the cows and brought them in the streets.

Since that day the festival of Gai Jatra is celebrated.
