Various programs offered by Nepal Medical College (NMC)
-
MBBS Program
The Faculty of Medicine of Nepal directs the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program at the University of Kathmandu. It includes the basic four-and-a-half-year academic curriculum that includes basic medical sciences, community medicine, forensics, medical informatics, community-based learning and the study of clinical problems and clinical experiences.
After passing the MBBS exam, a one-year rotation internship is mandatory at Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital. It is mandatory that all NMC graduates carry out a rotation internship at NMCTH, which is a prerequisite for the Nepal Medical Council licensing exam in order to obtain registration to practice as a full-fledged medical professional in Nepal.
MBBS curriculum
The MBBS curriculum of the University of Kathmandu is based on the conceptual framework of “SPICES” and emphasizes student-centered learning, problem-based learning, community-based learning, elective study and systematic approach to medical education university and adopts international practices in medicine Instruction. Copies of the MBBS curriculum can be purchased for more detailed information.
The first two academic years focus on basic medical sciences with interdepartmental integration and clinical correlation. A holistic approach to health and the health system in Nepal, supplemented by the student-patient relationship and medical diagnosis, encourages students to expose themselves to patients at the Educational Hospital of the School of Medicine in Nepal and allows you to familiarize yourself with the system of health care architecture in Nepal.
Clinical issues, community medicine and forensic medicine, community medicine and community management experience, community field experience and junior clinical internship continue until the end of four and a half years of the MBBS curriculum according to the University of Kathmandu.
Additional courses incorporated into NMC’s MBBS program
Emerging socio-economic changes, epidemiological transitions, alternations in the nature of medical responsibilities and changes in the system of individual professionals. Schools / schools around the world. If you are not a doctor, you should be able to work on your future jobs. The new version of the third version of the University of Kathmandu – 2001 and later versions.
Elective study
In accordance with the philosophy of adopting the “ESPECIAS” curriculum of the University of Kathmandu for its MBBS curriculum, the provision of an optional study in the MBBS curriculum is commendable.
In the student-centered, problem-based, integrated, community-based, elective and systematically oriented approach, in relation to the “SPICES” concept, the inclusion of the elective study to complete the SPICE model in terms of student learning, of the utmost importance.
Elective study offers a good opportunity for a student to conduct an independent study. A student must sign a contract with his guide for certain periods of time on a specific topic related to elective study. In schools / medical schools between four and twelve weeks and the duration of elective study.
A student must make a project proposal for an elective study that is usually near the end of the MBBS program. The areas of elective study vary from one student to another.
The tendency of foreign medical students to study electively in Nepal, especially in the hospital valley that includes NMCTH, is on the rise. In the same way, medical students started leaving Nepal in exchange programs. Elective study offers the opportunity to undertake small individual projects that allow people to work on their projects during a period in which they do not participate in other teaching / learning activities.
This allows you to draw conclusions from the results of your projects. Through elective study, the seed of research is the culture of the medical profession. Therefore, elective study offers a great opportunity to acquire medical skills to make their own decisions, which are considered the most important professional skills of a medical graduate.
It allows the medical graduate to perform the skills of a doctor by demonstrating his skills while working independently. A four-week period has been proposed for the optional study in NMC.
Field experience in the community
The university medical education program prepares a person to fulfill the responsibilities of a medical graduate at the end of the MBBS program. The learning places identified for the future of learning improve understanding, make learning meaningful and motivate students’ learning in general.
The community field experience, in the form of community / community based learning, has been incorporated into the MBBS curriculum and includes community diagnosis and the district’s health management guidance program. Experts in the field of health management in the orientation program.
The goal of medical education at NMC
The final objective of the MBBS program at NMC is not only to allow medical graduates to acquire skills related to the knowledge, skills and aptitude required by a graduate in medicine to complete university medical education, but also to give them opportunity to get acquainted with Discover how medical informatics will ultimately help them work efficiently.
Furthermore, with the experience gained through sufficient clinical and clinical exposures and an elective study, doctors can critically analyze health problems and resolve them with independent decision-making processes.

Medical informatics
The role of computers in revolutionizing the speed, accuracy, validity and reliability of any kind of task performed by human effort needs no elaboration. The computerization of the work system has in fact become a parameter by which the progress of development in any field of human effort is measured today.
Understanding this, secondary schools in Nepal have computer education as one of the optional. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the nature of work in educational institutions, in private companies, in many government offices, banks, travel agencies, hotels, not to mention international organizations in Nepal, has shifted from document files to electronic files.
Some of the nursing homes, hospitals and clinics have also started their services with computer assistance.
Innovative colleges / medical schools expose their medical students to a large number of learning resources and one that is widely used is the utility of computers in learning and practicing the medical profession.
Computer simulated programs, computer consulting, biostatistics programs, medical informatics and management training, teleconferences, to name a few, are some of the examples incorporated in medical education related to computer technology today.
There lies the intimacy between medical science, medical education and medical practice and, in this sense, information technologies can influence each other. With this in mind, Nepal Medical College is the pioneer in Nepal in setting up computer networks in the various departments of its university hospital and medical school before starting the MBBS program.
The NMC also initiated the provision of including medical information in the MBBS curriculum and was implemented by the first MBBS student group. Students are given the opportunity to learn how to use the computer from the first year, which allows them to use computer terminals in different rooms and to access patient information via computer while performing clinical rotation during placement.
In the neighborhood from the third academic year onwards. When they reach the junior internship period in the fifth academic year, they will have enough time and opportunity to work individually with computers and become familiar with the state of the art, while they write a summary of the patients during the internship.
After completing the internship, NMC graduates in medicine performing domestic duties as domestic officers at NMCTH and other hospitals will undoubtedly be able to store patient data in clinics and hospital rooms independently and will benefit from storage of data that would facilitate research work during the first years of their entry into the medical profession.
Therefore, in addition to following the basic MBBS curriculum, a shift towards the acquisition of skills in medical knowledge through data processing, decision-making, health planning and implementation was addressed.
Towards the achievement of efficiency in carrying out the responsibilities of a graduate in medicine during the 21st century, it is expected that medical informatics will make the MBBS curriculum of the University of Kathmandu much more effective in terms of translation of learning objectives into job skills.
