Nepal has given birth to many great people who have made great contributions in different fields. They are regarded as our national personalities. The Government of Nepal has declared such great people as the National Heroes. Let’s discuss briefly and learn about each of them.
An individual man or a woman, who has had contributed significantly to the development, well-being, welfare, name and fame of his or her country and people, is called a national hero. Nepal has produced many such great personalities who have had made exemplary contributions in different areas. Our country has declared some of them as the ‘National Heroes’ (Rashtriya Bibhuti). We should always remember and respect them.

Throughout the history of Nepal, various persons have contributed to the nation. Because of their contribution to the nation and society, they are respected as the “National luminaries (sapnta). Some of them gave up their lives, and others their labor, knowledge and property for the nation and its art and literature. There are innumerable persons in our county whom we remember as important persons.
Among them, a very few are listed as being the national luminaries. A committee, chaired by Bal Krishna Sama, had declared 13 persons as the national luminaries in 2018 BS. In the 2050s, two other persons have been included in the list: Pasang Lhamu Sherpa (2055) and Shankhdhar Shakhwa (2056).

In 2066, Kirat Mahaguru, Falgunananda has also been included in the list of national luminaries. Now, all together, seventeen (17) persons have been declared the national luminaries. The following is the brief introduction to each of them.

- Sage Janak: national luminaries of Nepal
Janak was the king of Mithila, known as Janakpur these days; he was a religious and spiritual-minded person and a follower of Brahma. He was a learned man, a sage and a promoter of spiritual philosophy. He gave more importance to the soul (Atma) than to body (deh or sarir). Hence, he was called ‘Bideha’ and his kingdom ‘Baidehi’.

He was a great devotee of Brahma. He lived his life as a sage, always studying religious books and philosophy. He gave more importance to soul and spirit than the mere physical body. He had great respect of intellectuals, sages, Yogis, and pundits. He patronized many intellectuals, including women. Maitreyi and Gargi were notable women intellectuals who graced his court.
In his court, he used to have discussions and debates among sages and intellectuals on religion, Bhakti (devotion), Moksha (salvation), scriptures (Shruti), and civic policies (Neeti).

During his period, all the people in his state were happy, prosperous and secure. During the reign of king Janak, Mithila was the center for knowledge and learning. He used to give high respect to learned people. His court used to have great philosophers like Aruni, Yagyavalkya, Gargi, Maitreyi etc.
He had developed ancient Mithila as a center for intellectual exercises. Art, literature, language, philosophy, culture and civilization were promoted during his rule. He greatly contributed to the name and glory of ancient Nepal. Therefore, he was famous in the ancient Mithila region as well as across the entire Bharatvarsha (the greater India).

- Sita: National luminaries of Nepal
Sita was the daughter of king Janak and wife of Lord Rama. She is also called Janaki. Hindus worship her as Janaki Mata (Goddess Janaki). It is believed that King Janak found her while ploughing the field. She grew up as a foster daughter of King Janak.
She was a virtuous and ideal person of the ancient world. She is respected for her personal character, toleration and patience. She was an ideal person with full of virtues. It is believed that she never compromised her virtue even if she suffered many difficulties in her life.
She was married to Lord Ram. She symbolizes the character of an ideal woman: tolerant, wise, pure, virtuous, courageous and dignified. Hindus from all over the world pay very high respect to her.
They worship her as a devout wife of Ram and as the goddess, Janaki Mata. Mithila of Nepal is popular in the Hindu scripts because of Sita Mata. There is a famous Ram Janaki Mandir in Janakpur.

Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini in 563 BC. He is a great son of Nepal. He was born to King Suddodhana and Queen Mayadevi of Kapilbastu. He was born in Lumbini, Nepal. After years of meditation, he attained enlightenment; thus, he became the Buddha or the Enlightened one.
He got enlightened and became Buddha. He preached Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Paths. Love, compassion, nonviolence, kindness, right conduct and tolerance are some of his teachings.
His teachings and principles are known as Buddhism. Lumbini is the source and inspiration of peace in the world. He preached peace, non-violence, and sympathy for fellow beings. Everyone respects him as the founder of peace and non-violence.

His principles are more useful in the present day society as they care for lasting peace and promote tolerance. After he got Nirvana, a new religion as Buddhism founded. To-day, Buddhism is one of the major religions in the world. Buddha is also known as the light of Asia. He made Nepal known all over the world. Lumbini, where he was born has become a popular pilgrimage site and a center of tourism in Nepal.

He was one of the famous persons from the Lichchhhavi period. He was a learned and farsighted King of Lichhavi period. He led the country as a strong and independent territory. He helped and spread the name and fame of the country in Tibet, China, and India. He also ran the administration in an efficient way.
He is also known for his book Shabda Vidya. A Chinese traveler, Huen Tsang. has explained about his popularity and ability in his diary. During his period. Nepali art and architecture reached its height.
Although no longer surviving, his palace, the Kailashkut Bhawan. is believed to be a great specimen of excellent architecture. As a result, the Lichchhavi period is also called the Golden Period in the history of Nepal. He was a lover of art, architecture and literature as well.
His book, ‘Sabda Bidhya’ was widely read in those days. He built a famous palace called Kailashkut Bhawan, a masterpiece of architecture. He popularized Nepal through art, architecture and literature. He extended the territories of his kingdom far and wide.
He established the friendly relationship with both the neighboring countries. He married his daughter, Brikuti to Tibetan King Shrongchonggamppo and his sister Bhogadevi to an Indian King, Sur Sen. Contributions of Ram Shah: Ram Shah was one of the great rulers of Gorkha. He was very famous for his justice. He made regulations in his kingdom. He established many courts and provided equal justice to his people. “Nyayo Napaya Gorkha Janu” was the very famous saying during his time. He introduced a standard system of weight, scales, and measurements. Mana, Pathi, Dhak, Taraju, etc were introduced by him in Nepal.
Ram Shah was the king of Gorkha: he was famous for dispensing justice to people. Ram Shah was one of the great rulers and reformers of Gorkha. He brought in many reforms in the economic, social, religious and legal systems of the state. He made it sure that justice was easily available to ordinary people.
Because of his reputation for providing justice to people, the legend has it that anyone deprived of justice should go to Gorkha (Nyaya Napaya Gorkha Janu). He was a learned Icing and he respected scholars. He was known as a ‘Just King! There was a saying in his time, “If you are deprived of justice, go to Gorkha.’
He was well-known for his social, economic, judicial and administrative reforms. He introduced a standard system of measurement, fixed rate of interest, classified land according to its use and quality, established courts, developed trade with neighboring kingdoms, carried religious reforms and so on.

Amar Singh Thapa: national luminaries of Nepal
Amar Singh Thapa was a brave soldier and warrior. He led the Nepalese army during the Anglo-Nepal War (1814-1816 AD). Amar Singh took the responsibility of protecting western Nepal against the attack of the East India Company.
He had a great responsibility and fought valiantly to protect the sovereignty and existence of the nation. When the war ended with the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816, Nepal lost its territory to British India. Amar Singh Thapa was against the treaty and it made him very unhappy.

7. Bhimsen Thapa: National Hero of Nepal

Contributions of Bhimsen Thapa: Bhimsen Thapa was the Prime Minister of Nepal during the Anglo-Nepal war. He ruled for 34 years as the Prime Minister. He was a clever diplomat and a true patriot.
He modernized the Nepalese army. He developed trade of Nepal and abolished many bad social practices in the country. He tried to make an organization of Asian countries like India, China, Tibet, Burma, Iran, etc against the British. He brought several social and economic reforms in the country.
Bhimsen Thapa was one of the famous Prime Ministers of Nepal. He reformed the army and the social system. It is said that he tried to unite the entire South Asia to fight against British imperialism. He was a great patriot and a nationalist. Credit goes to him for building the Dharahara (the minor) of Kathmandu.
8. Balbhadra Kunwar : National Hero of Nepal
Like Amar Singh Thapa, Bala Bhadra Kunwar was a great soldier of Nepal. Balbhadra Kunwar was a great warrior of Nepal. During Anglo-Nepal war, he was the in-charge of Nalapani. Captain Balabhadra Kunwar was a great military leader.
He was the in charge of the Nalapani Fort during the Anglo-Nepal War of 1814-16AD. During the Anglo-Nepal War, he showed the bravery of Nepali people in the battle of Nalapani. Although they were heavily outnumbered and poorly equipped, Nepalese army, under his command, fought against the army of the East India Company. He fought bravely with the British soldiers.
The extraordinary bravery and courage that he exhibited during the British assault of Nalapani Fort amazed the British and the world. Against all odds, he didn’t surrender to the enemy. During the war, he had only 600 troops including women and children whereas the British had 3500 soldiers with modern weapons like guns and cannons.
Even then the British could not defeat Balbhadra Kunwar. Due to his heroism and bravery, he even received praise from his enemies, the British army generals. The British soldiers were highly impressed by the bravery of Balbhadra and erected a stone inscription in Nalapani in respect of him. The British honored him installing an inscription in memory of his bravery.
He is an example of patriotism, bravery, dedication and selfless sacrifice to one’s country. He immortalized the bravery of the Nepalese or the Gorkhas.
9. Bhanu Bhakta Acharya: National Hero of Nepal
Bhanu Bhakta Acharya was born in 1814 in Tanahu. He translated the epic Ramayana into Nepali language and wrote many books of poetry. Because of his great contribution to Nepali literature, he received the title of aadi Kavi (the first poet). Although Prithvi Narayan Shah unified the country in terms of territory, it was Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, who through his works in Nepali language, unified the nation in a cultural sense.
In short, He is the pioneer poet. He did as great a job as Prithivinarayan Shah. He translated the Ramayan from Sanskrit into Nepali. He wrote many other books: Ram Gita, Badhu Sikhya, Bhaktamala, Prasnottari etc. He helped to unify the country through the medium of common language.
