Translation of Nepali National Anthem in English

We are hundreds of flowers, the one garland – Nepali
Sovereign, spread out from Mechi to Mahakali.
Amassing nature’s millions of resources
By the blood of heroes, independent and immovable.
Land of knowledge, land of peace, Terai, hills, mountains
Indivisible this beloved, our motherland Nepal.
The diverse races, languages, faiths, and cultures are so extensive
Our progressive nation, long live Nepal.

Places where we use national anthem

National anthem generally means a patriotic song or music that evokes as well as acclaims the tradition, culture, history, geography, the struggle of the people to gain independence for the nation through the official song of the nation.

Each and every country in this world does have a national anthem in their most common language. A national anthem is the main aspect of any nation in this world which signifies the status and on which every countryman is proud of.  Any patriotic person values the national anthem in the most respectful way possible.

Typically, a national anthem speaks about the country in the general. It represents the progress the country has been making, acclaims the war and pain in achieving freedom, and in some case explains the beauty, rich cultural heritage, and realm the creation of the Nation.

For example, the national anthem of Nepal explains the way Nepalese from a different race, cultural background make a garland of the Nepali race. Also, it has beautifully explained the Nature’s billion gifts that make Nepal one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries in the world.

Thus, a national anthem is more about the wordings than the music. It is the wordings of the song that makes it more important for the country.

National anthems ignite the patriotism in people- this is probably the best sign of having a national anthem. When played at the right place, National anthem motivates the people.

There are certain places and occasions where national anthems are played in order to explode patriotism in people, unite the whole country and to motivate people to do good for the entire nation.

Here, I present you list of different places where the use of national anthem can boost the patriotism of people and get to the larger mass of people all around the world.

Hence, some of the best places or occasions where the national anthem is played are:

  1. Sporting events:

National Anthems are played in diverse contexts. One of places or occasions where the national anthem is best used are the sporting events. Any national or international games does not start unless the national anthem of either country is played.

The history of playing the national anthem at the sporting events dates back to the World War II. It was only during the WWII that the anthem was played regularly at the beginning of each game.

Since then, at the start of each game be it football, cricket, basketball, the national anthem is played to kick start the game. It is believed that, by playing the National anthem at the beginning of the game, it motivates the players to get a medal for the country and on the other hand, all the citizens feel the sense of pride towards the country by listening to the national anthem in the global stage representing the country.

Also, at the Olympic Games, which is regarded as one of the most important games in the world, the national anthems are played during the ceremony of medal presentation to the winners of every game.

  1. At school assembly:

In some countries, the National anthem is played or sung by all the students in an assembly before the day at the school starts. This is taken as an exercise of providing a sense of patriotism in the students. Almost all the schools in Nepal make their students sing the national anthem at the start of the day in an attempt to make them proud of the country while making them understand the importance of the national song and respect it more.

  1. At the cinemas:

While its common to play the National anthem at the game shows or at school, there is yet another place where National anthem is played and that is at the Cinemas. Recently, there has been using national anthems before the starting of the movie at the cinemas.

This is in practice in India and even in Nepal. The major motive behind playing the national anthem before cinema is to motivate the citizens to support the national movie industry and watch own movies rather than watching foreign movies.

In India, it playing national anthem is made mandatory in cinema halls before the screening of the movie. Though various political groups are against of the notion forcing people to sing the national anthem at the cinemas, it was made mandatory by the Indian law to play national anthem to make people get the feeling of patriotism.

  1. During diplomatic visits:

Any diplomatic visits start with the playing of the National anthem of both countries. For instance, if a president of USA is on a diplomatic visit to India, a ceremony is held where the diplomats the pay respect to both countries by playing the National anthem of both countries.

During the diplomatic visits, the National anthem is usually played by the Armed forces honoring the diplomats.

Playing the national anthem in such ceremony is regarded as a highly respectful event for both the nations in establishing cordial relations between both nations.

  1. Radio and television stations:

Many television and radio stations have been adopting the practice of playing the national anthem before signing on in the morning and when they sign off at night.

For instance, the national anthem of Nepal is played before the broadcast of the news in the early morning and before signing out for the night. Also, in Colombia, the law has it that the national anthem has to be played at 6:00 and 18:00 on every radio and television station.

  1. At the parliamentary meeting:

There are various countries that have made it mandatory to include singing or playing anthem in the parliament/assembly before the meeting starts. One of such countries is Nepal.

Every parliamentary meeting starts with playing the national anthem and all the members of parliament pay respect to it by standing up in the parliament hall.

In India too, there is a practice of playing the national anthem before the starting of the meeting.

  1. National holidays: Independence day, democracy day, republic day:

There would be no perfect occasion for playing the national anthem than on special days like Independence Day, republic day or democracy day. These days mark a very special historical event that makes a country what it is.

For example, on the Independence Day of the US, various programs are held and the center focus of the program remains the playing of the national anthem in front of the large mass of people.

Playing the National anthem of the country in such very special days further ignites the sense of patriotism in the citizens of the country.

  1. At the court:

There is a practice of playing national anthems at the court before the hearing of the cases. In Nepal too, before the court starts its function, the national anthem is played to respect the Nepalese laws and policies.

  1. At the Inauguration of programs:

Many times, we can see a program being started with the playing of the national anthems. For example, before the movie awards program starts, all the attendees stand up to pay the respect to the flag and the sing-along the national anthem. Similarly, many schools or college annual programs starts with the singing of the National Anthem.

Like said earlier, National anthems can be played in diverse contexts and occasions. But, the main focus of the context should always be at uniting people and generating the sense of patriotism in People.

As they say, music has the capacity of binding people, and when the music is so composed to ignite the feeling of patriotism, it should be played often for the sake of generating harmony in the nation.

The above-mentioned places are just a few of the places where we use the National anthem of the country to unite people and make them the sense of patriotism in them.

A country’s National anthem depicts the nation and does not invoke violence, but invoke a sense of freedom and patriotism and has a positive impact on the countrymen. So, having it played at an array of different places and contexts can make the countrymen more humble and positive towards the nation.

When playing the national anthem at the above-listed places, it unites the countrymen, inspire feelings of loyalty, devotion and create a sense of pride towards the culture and identity of the nation. Since unity of the people is the most important factor to keep the country towards the development, it is an utmost necessity to keep the citizens bonded and National anthem can be used to create harmony and peace in the country.
