The Ramayana tells the story of Lord Rama’s life, including his birth, his childhood, his marriage to Sita, his exile from Ayodhya, and his eventual return to Ayodhya and victory over the demon king Ravana. While the story of Lord Rama is primarily a religious one, it also has a number of themes and messages that are relevant to the human experience.
For example, the story teaches the importance of duty, loyalty, and karma. It also explores the nature of good and evil, the power of love and friendship, and the importance of family.
Who Is Lord Rama
Rama, often spelled Ramacandra, is an incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu in Hinduism. His exploits, including the death of the demon king Ravana, are chronicled in the oldest Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana, which was composed about the 5th century BCE but features some later modifications.
Lord Rama, who many Hindus believe was inspired by a real person, is often regarded as the most morally upstanding figure in Hindu mythology. He and his wife Sita serve as a model of chastity and fidelity to one another. The Ramayana also emphasizes the value and benefits of doing one’s virtuous duty or dharma.
Rama’s Family
King Dasaratha, a prince of the solar race, and Queen Kausalya are Rama’s biological parents. Rama was born at the close of the Second Age, or Treta-yuga, at the request of the gods in order to defeat Ravana, the king of Lanka and a terrifying multi-headed demon (modern Sri Lanka). It was Dasaratha who constructed the sacrificial fire where the great god Vishnu came in response to the gods’ prayers.
The godly king was given a jar of nectar, and because of his generosity, Kausalya was able to have the semi-divine Rama. Three of Rama’s half brothers, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna, also possessed divine powers, but to a lesser extent. Laksmana, son of Sumitra, was Rama’s favorite sibling and excellent comrade, and Hanuman, the monkey warrior, was Rama’s loyal servant (or Hanumat).

Rama Meets Sita
Rama’s first epic journey began when Sage Visvamitra summoned him for assistance in vanquishing a Raksasa, or demon. Leaving their boyhood home in Ayodhya, capital of the northern kingdom of Koshala, Rama and Laksmana accompanied Visvamitra to his house, where they killed Taraka, a nasty female demon.
Rama, who had been blessed with divine weapons, continued his travels and eventually found himself in Mithila. While in Videha, our hero was welcomed by King Janaka, whose lovely daughter Sita he would later marry (also called Janaki or Maithili).
Anyone who could successfully bend the enormous bow that had previously been the weapon of the mighty god Shiva would be awarded the hand of the king’s daughter in marriage. Because of his supernatural power, Rama was able to not only bend the bow but break it in half, securing his marriage to Sita, his first and most revered wife.
Rama’s Exile
Rama’s mother’s hunchback slave Manthara posed a significant obstacle to his smooth ascension to the throne of Ayodhya. The jealous Kaikeyi, Dasaratha’s second wife, was persuaded by her to try to convince her husband to name Bharata as heir to the throne instead of Rama. Because of this offense, Rama was banished from the kingdom for fourteen years.
So Rama, Sita, and Laksmana set off towards the far southern city of Citrakuta, located deep within the Dandaka forest. In the meantime, Dasaratha passed away, but Bharata, outraged by the injustice done to Rama, renounced his title to the throne in order to track down the exiled prince and restore him to his proper place.
When Rama and Lakshmana finally reunited after fourteen years, Rama was still unwilling to return to Ayodhya in accordance with his father’s wishes. Bharata agreed to serve as regent until then, and to show his people that Rama had made the right decision, he wore Rama’s shoes.
Worship & Representation in Art
Rama is still worshipped in India and South-East Asia, but especially in the states of Bihar and country Nepal. He has, for example, a beautiful temple at Rameswaram that is known for its columned corridor from the 17th century CE. The Ramanandis is also the largest Vaishnava monastic order and may be the most strict. Some Buddhists also think of Rama as an incarnation of Buddha, and statues of the hero can sometimes be seen on the outside of Buddhist temples.
Rama is always shown in art as a young man with green or blue skin, a bow and arrows, and a yellow robe. Most of the time, he is with Sita, Laksmana, and Hanuman, who are all part of Rama’s family, or Rama Parivara. Hindu sculpture, wall paintings, and art, in general, are full of scenes from the Ramayana, especially forest scenes with Rama hunting deer and the epic battle with Ravana.
