Melamchi Drinking Water Project of Nepal
The Kathmandu Valley is facing a severe scarcity of drinking water. The supply of drinking water is quite nominal compared to the demand. Several rivers, streams and rivulets have been flowing nearby the Valley. Melamchi is one of such fresh water streams that flows through Sindhupalchok district, north-east of the Kathmandu Valley.
Keeping this fact in mind, Melamchi drinking water project has been brought into action. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is the main donor of the project. It has reached a loan agreement of US$ 137 million (around nine billion rupee) for the Melamchi project.
The ADB has also withdrawn a post condition that barred autard of contract for the construction of the 26.5 kilometre diversion tunnel without prior handover of the management of the water supply system in the Kathmandu Valley to the private sector.
