The Isle Of Raasay- The Most Unique Scottish Island To Visit

in Travels
A A

Just off the mainland of Scotland, located near the amazing Isle of Skye, is an equally gorgeous and fascinating Isle called the Isle of Raasay. But what makes it so amazing and why should you visit?

The Isle Of Raasay

History of the island

The Isle of Raasay can be dated back to the 6th century with origins related to the Gaelic Kingdom of Dalriada. However, in the 8th century with Scotland being hit by Norse invasions, Raasay fell and it became a Norse subject. In 1266, it returned to the Kingdom of Scotland and was ruled by the famous Clan MacLeod. That was until the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where British troops defeated the Scottish Jacobite army for the final time near Inverness.

Things to do

Now the Isle of Raasay is firmly in Scottish hands and it is a place that many tourists visit when they are traveling in Scotland. It attracts so many visitors because of its beautiful scenery, amazing wilderness walking routes, and the divine whiskey that is distilled on the island. There are even opportunities to go kayaking and explore the North Sea or the Sound of Raasay which separates the island and the Isle of Skye; which is accessible by a short ferry ride.

The beauty of the island is that it has walking routes for all ages and all abilities. With woodland trails, coastal paths, disused railway paths, and open moorland there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. There is even a trail you can follow that will take you to an abandoned castle. However, if you are more adventurous then the Jacobean mansion Raasay House offers activities such as coasteering, mountain biking, and kayaking, previously mentioned, along the rocky coastline of the island.

With the diverse landscape of the island, there are some sensational views from the top of Dun Caan. Standing at 433m high, you get some picture-perfect views of the highlands which can include the bluest of waters to the greenest of grass. At the top of Dun Caan, it can be a sobering moment of how beautiful Scotland is.

When to visit

Some believe the best time to visit the Isle of Raasay is in the spring and summer months, as you will find the tourist information center bustling and plenty of people enjoying the weather on the island. The Raasay House is one of the most popular hotels, which also features the outdoor activities center, on the island and is truly stunning to look at. In the summer the view of the house is something to behold and when you turn around from looking at the house you can see the Narrows of Raasay and the rolling hills on the Isle of Skye.

However, visiting during the autumn or winter months is still a great time for a retreat. If you are a whiskey lover then you must visit the Isle of Raasay distillery. At the distillery, you can experience some of the best single malt whiskey in the whole of Scotland, with scenic views and easy sipping whiskey what more Even if you are not a whiskey lover, it is still definitely worth a visit with a café on offer and a chance to see the amazing views of the Isle of Skye.

So save up all the money you have, earn more by using tradingforexsites and visit the rugged island in Scotland.
