To reach this site, visitors have to start trekking from Lukla, the gateway to Everest base camp. North Base Camp

North Base Camp is located in Tibet, China. This camp is for trekkers who ascend or descend Everest via Tibet, rather than from Nepal. This camp is situated at an altitude of 5,150 meters or 16900 ft above sea level.

It is pretty difficult to get to this camp as travelers require a permit from the Chinese government. However, once the permits are granted, the travelers reach the camp crossing different villages while internalizing the unique culture and nature of Tibet.

On the Northern ridge, above base camps, there are six other campsites, Camp I ( 5180 m), Camp II (6100 m), camp III (6500 m), camp IV (7010 m), camp V (7775 m) and camp VI (8510 m) where climbers rest during ascend and descend.

After a delay of a few years to double-check the measurements, the British surveyors proclaimed the authorized height of Peak XV to be 8839 M in 1856 and renamed Peak XV Mount Everest.

However, there were several misunderstandings regarding the name as it had different local names. To rule out such misunderstandings, The Royal Geographic society claimed the official title “Mount Everest” in 1865. The naming of the mountain was done on the recommendation of Mr. Waugh. Mr. Wayes was the British Surveyor General.

Andrew Waugh recommended naming the mountain after Sir George Everest as Waugh was Mr. Everest’s successor in the post of Surveyor General.

It was Sir Geroge Everest who located the mountain ‘later called Mount Everest’ and to honor him, the British formally named the mountain Mt. Everest after Sir George Everest although it was already being called Chomolungma by the Tibetans and Sagarmatha by the Nepalese. Despite Sir George’s objection, the mountain was named after him in his honor.
