This post is about to information about Indra Jatra festival in Kathmandu, Nepal. Indra Jatra festival is classical dance festival of Nepal. It is held at the beginning of September month of every year. According to Nepali calendar Indra Jatra festival falls on Bhadra – Ashoj.

Indra Jatra festival is perhaps one of the most important festivals around the Nepali calendar year. Indra Jatra is certainly the most spectacular of all the Nepalese festivals. Both Hindus and Buddhists celebrate this festival Indra Jatra. Indra Jatra festival lasts for about eight days. During these long eight days, there is much rejoicing, dancing and ceremony. Indra Jatra is one of dancing festival of Nepal.

According to Hindu religion, Indra is a Lord of Rain and the king of Heaven. Jatra means the procession. So, Indra Jatra is celebration of Hindu’s Lord Indra’s Day.  Indra Jatra festival is festival of Kathmandu, Nepal.  Some Nepalese believes that Indra Jatra festival is thanking day to Lord Indra for the rain. Some other people says that Indra Jatra festival is celebrated in the honor of deity Bhairab. As we, all know that Bhairav or Bhairab is Lord Shiva’s manifestation and is believed to destroy evil.

Both Hindus and Buddhist communities come together to celebrate Indra Jatra festival in Nepal. Indra Jatra is a delightful festival of classical dances in Nepal. Numerous varieties of traditional dances can be observed on this occasion. Name of the festival Indra Jatra goes after Lord Indra who is the god of rain and also as the king of heaven.

On the first day, a long pole is erected close to Hanuman Dhoka to propitiate Indra. We have already told you that Indra is a god of rain and king of the heaven. After its erection there is a colourful display of classical dancing by masked dancers.

On the third day, the living goddess Kumari is brought out into the streets in her special chariot from the Kumari Ghar.  Her attendants, Ganesh and Bhairab, represented by two young boys, accompany living Goddess Kumari. It is on this day that president of Nepal including all high level officer of Nepal government attends the festivities. The masked dancers at the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square entertain them. They also pay homage to Living Goddess Kumari.

Throughout the Kathmandu cities, many wooden makes of Bhairab are exhibited and at certain times of the day, local beer pours forth from their mouths through a spout to revive the local revelers. Indra, with his arms outstretched, can also be seen at vantage points, set atop a high platform. History records that it was on this day that unified Nepal. Throughout the festival, many stages displays of classical dancing and religious tableaux can be seen in the Kathmandu durbar square.

There may be many reasons to celebrate the Indra Jatra festival in Nepal. There may be some history of this festival for celebration. But the main reason to celebration Indra Jatra Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal is to appease Hindu god Indra.  

When do Nepalese celebrate Indra Jatra festival

Indra Jatra festival is very famous festival in not only in Nepal but also in the world. It is famous for classical and masked dances performed the masked dancers. Indra Jatra, festival of Nepal begins every year from the day of the Bhadra Dwadasi to Ashwin Krishna Chaturdasi. Indra Jatra is an eight-day long festival. This year it starts from September 2014. It means from Bhadra  to Aswin 2071 as per Nepali Vikram Samvat Calendar. The official calendar day for the Indra Jatra is on September 2014.  The official Nepali calendar for the year 2071 is not published yet.

Every year Indra Jatra falls on the September month. This year it starts from September 2014. It means from Bhadra to Aswin 2071 as per Nepali Vikram Samvat Calendar. The official calendar day for the Indra Jatra is on September 2014.  The official Nepali calendar for the year 2071 is not published yet. Because of that, Indra Jatra 2014 date or Indra Jatra 2071 date is not available now. We will updated in coming days with with date of Indra Jatra 2014 or Indra Jatra 2071.
