Nepali Films – 14 Highest-Budgeted Nepali Movies of All Time

The Nepali movie Industry does not have a long history but it has its place in cultural aspects. Nepal being a poor and underdeveloped country does not have many high-budgeted movies. Commonly, if the movie is loved by the audience and also makes money it is said to be successful. The budget does not matter at all. If audiences like the movie, storyline, script, and actors involved in it then even if the movie is not high-budgeted it can be a hit. Although the budget does not matter most of the time it does sometimes. Some of the movies are famous among audiences because of being high-budgeted. 1. Pare Ni Maya Jalaima

Pare Ni Maya Jalaima is a Nepali movie that won the best screenplay award for writer-director Prithvi Rana Magar in 2005. It was also nominated for best story, best screenplay, and best cinematography. It is also one of the high-budgeted movies with a production cost of about 18 million Nepali Rupees. 80% of this movie was filmed in Hong Kong and 20% was filmed in Nepal. The length of this movie is 132 minutes. This is a romantic movie released on May 20, 2004. The actors and actresses who were cast in this movie were Dilip Rayamajhi, Uttam Pradhan, Jharana Bajracharya, Mithila Sharma, Sunil Thapa, Rajendra Khadgi, etc. Scriptwriter for this movie was Prithvi Rana Magar, this movie was directed by Ram Sharan Ghimire, and Prithvi Rana Magar and Hitman Gurung was the producer of this movie.

The cinematographer of this movie was done by Gavin Liew who was a cinematographer from Hong Kong. The production house of this movie was First Global Premier Pvt. Ltd., Tilottama Pictures. This movie has an interesting and romantic storyline. This movie got music from Sachin Singh. There was a long and exhausting battle between the investors which is why the film’s release was delayed for three years. Until it came to theaters the charm of this highly anticipated movie had already vanished. Being a nice movie it could not Hit in the Box office because of poor marketing and excessive use of the English language for which Nepalese audiences were not adjusted. People who watched this movie liked it and appreciated it. This movie only made around 30%  of its total investment.

2. Bagmati

Among many high-budgeted movies, Bagmati is one. Actors and actresses featured in this movie were Rajesh Hamal, Shiva Shrestha, Keki Adhikari, Mukunda Shrestha, Dhruba Koirala, and Kanchan Thakuri. Actress Keki Adhikari was seen as a guitarist who loves music. This movie was prepared in 45 days with an investment of around 50 million. This movie was filmed from badware which is the starting point on Bagmati to Chovar where the Bagmati river exits from Kathmandu. Bagmati’s teaser trailer says that Nepal is not what it used to be earlier. The producer of this movie said it is one of the top-quality films with the highest investment in the Nepali Film Industry. This movie is made by a professional team who have wide experience in making South Indian Movies. Scriptwriter for this movie was Sunny Kerala.

The cinematographer was Shiju Guruvayoor. According to one of the actors Rajesh Hamal, the film is based on a social theme and has a highly ambitious objective and also expressed the belief that this movie will contribute towards raising the standard of Nepali cinema and will take Nepali Cinema to the international level. At one of the press conferences, one of the producers of this movie Ashoda Rai said that this film has been made to fulfill social responsibility in the context of the Bagmati River which optimizes an entire civilization since it is losing its natural beauty due to human activities. This movie was a hit on the cinema screen on 15th January 2015.

3. Chankhe Shankhe Pankhe

Chankhe Shankhe Pankhe is a Nepali comedy movie with patriotic feelings. This movie featured Subash Thapa, Sudarshan Thapa, Pooja Sharma, Nandita KC, Rajaram Poudel, Ramchandra Adhikari, Rabindra Khadka, etc. Subash Thapa acted as Chankhe, Sudarshan Thapa acted as Pankhe and Prem Puri acted as Shankhe. Sudarshan Thapa is the director and producer of the movie Santosh Sen Thakuri for the Aasusen Films banner.  Chankhe Shankhe Pankhe is a film about thieves and at last, all three heroes die in the movie in a police encounter. This movie was released in theaters on September 25, 2015, with other four movies named Highway to Dhumpus, Bhale Fight, and Kaamchor. Among other high-budgeted movies, this is also one with an investment of one crore.

This movie was previously planned to be released on May 15, 2015, but due to the earthquake on 25th April, its release date was postponed. This movie was also highly promoted in various avenues including some Indian websites and rickshaws on the streets. Sudarshan Thapa is the leading actor and Nandita KC is the leading actress in this movie. This movie was filmed within 20 days. This movie also featured well-known theater actors Pramod Agrahari and Rabindra Jha. The songs in this movie were very popular. Lyrics were given by Krishna Hari Baral and Ek Narayan Bhandari. Singers who sang the songs in this movie were Santosh Lama, Milan Amatya, Rupak Dotel, Bhim Limbu, Rukman Limbu, and Manoj Sewa. The music composer was Tara Prakash Limbu, Story was written by Ramsaran Pathak.

Login Manche is a Nepali love story movie. It was directed by popular television serial director Laya Sangraula. Just opposite as its name says this movie is a female-oriented movie that tells the story of the relationship in married life because of a psychological tussle between the married couple. This movie received a ‘U’ certificate which means it is suitable for every type of audience. This movie was released on February 6, 2015, with three other new releases Escape, Rath, Logne Manche, and Sunpani. Actors and actresses were Dilip Rayamajhi, Nandita KC, Nik Sharma, Keshav Bhattarai, Baldeep Rai, Anisha Gurung, etc. The cinematographer was Krishna Shrestha. Music was composed by Chetan Sapkota, It was produced under the Bandhu Films banner. The choreographer was Kabiraj Gahatraj. The producer was Pradeep Mittai. The singers were Swaroop Raj Acharya, Deepak Limbu, Mandavi Tripath, Indira Joshi, and Anju Pant.

5. Dipendra Sarkar

Dipendra Sarkar is a new Nepali movie produced by Santosh Sen. This movie is based on a book titled ‘Maile Dekheko Darbar’. This is a book written by one of the army officers of the royal palace who had seen Dipendra grow in front of him. This is a love story movie of Dipendra and Devyani Rana and is expected to be a blockbuster in the Nepali movie industry. In this movie, Pradeep Khadka is acting for the late Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah. AshuSen production is releasing this high-budgeted movie after the grand success of Prem Geet and its sequel Prem Geet 2. By the name of the movie, it is clear that it will be a Royal movie that will highlight the life of Royal Families including the late Prince Dipendra, former King Gyanendra, Late King Birendra, and late Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Shah, Late Prince Nirajan and Princess Shruti, Former Prince Paras Shah, and Princess Himani Rajya Laxmi Shah.

Late Royal families are even now remembered by Nepalese people with pride and dignity. Its budget is around 6 crore Nepali Rupees. June 1, 2001, is said to be an ill-fated day in Nepal’s history. On this day the whole family of King Birendra was killed at the party held in the Narayan Hiti Royal Palace. Even though there are unanswered questions about this accident this movie will not focus on this major incident but on the love story of Dipendra and Devyani Rana because according to information they used to like each other but Dipendra’s parents were not the side of this marriage, they refused.

6. Kabaddi Kabaddi

Kabaddi is a Nepali romantic comedy movie released on 27 November 2015. This movie was directed by Ram Babu Gurung. Actors and actresses featured in this movie are Dayahang Rai, Saugat Malla, Rishma Gurung, Buddhi Tamang, Samten Bhutia, and Priyanka Karki. Music for this movie was given by the famous Kali Prasad Baskota. This movie was produced by Black Horse Pictures and written by Ram Babu Gurung the director himself and Upendra Subba and production by Cinema Art. The cinematography is done by Shailendra D. Karki. Among the High budgeted movies in Nepali Movie Industry Kabaddi Kabaddi is also one investing around 1.2 crores. To recover its investment it has to do business of around 3 crores. It has become the fastest movie to touch 2 crores. Before this Nikhil’s Lootera took one week to touch this mark but Kabaddi Kabaddi did this in 5 days. This movie got strong publicity as well as good business at the multiplex.

Being an entertaining movie Kabaddi Kabaddi is far stronger and better than Kabaddi due to brand value. In the first 2 days, this film has done business of 1.30 crore. Jau Hida Pokhara was also being released when Kabaddi Kad=baddi was released so it became difficult for Kabaddi Kabaddi to find a good number of screens. But after its release, Kabaddi Kabaddi overtook Jau Hida Pokhara by a very big margin. It also replaced the Bollywood movie Tamasha on some of the screens. Songs from this movie named “Maya Ka Baadal”, “Lappan Chappan”, and “Hit Geet” were also a hit. Maotse Gurung won the Best Character award and the movie Kabaddi Kabaddi won Jury Award at the 8th Dcine Awards 2016.

7. Prem Geet

Prem Geet is a Nepali romantic movie which is directed by one of the most talented directors Sudarshan Thapa. Pradeep Khadka and Pooja Sharma are featured in leading roles. Pooja Sharma is cast as Geet, Pradeep Khadka as Prem, Saroj Khanal as Geet’s father, Rupa Rana as Prem’s mother, Laxmi Giri as Geet’s Grandmother, Norbu Tsering as Hotel Assistant in Mustang, and Rajaram Poudel as Prem’s Boss. This movie is produced by Santosh Sen. Music for this movie was given by Arjun Pokharel. This movie was released in 2015. Among other high-budgeted movies, this is also one with a budget of around 1.3 crore Nepali rupees. Most of the scenes of this movie were filmed in Mustang which is a lovely area as well as a very expensive one in Nepal.  This movie did business of 4.9 crores at the Box Office.

Song titles of this movie are “Ma Yesto geet launch”, “Maile Socheko just”, “Ma ta Cleopatra”, and “Jaba punch riverside”. In D Cine Award this movie won the Best Choreography award and the award recipient was Renesha Rai, Best Singer (female) award and the award recipient was Anju Panta, the Best Music award, and the award recipient was Arjun Pokharel. In the FAAN awards this movie won the Best character award and the award recipient was Laxmi Giri, the Best Lyricist award and this award recipient was Krishna Hari Baral, Best Singer (Female) award and the award recipient was Anju Panta, and Best couple award and the award recipient was Pradeep Khadka and Pooja Sharma. The many aspects of this movie and the people who worked in this movie were nominated for both award functions.
