About Happy Kukur Tihar (dog festival of Nepal):- Tihar festival is also known as Deepawali. Tihar is about five-days-long festival celebrated by Hindu peoples in Nepal as well as the some Indian states of Assam and Sikkim together with Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

As we all know, Tihar is the festival of lights, as diyas and candles are lit inside and outside of almost every houses in order to make it illuminate at night. As per the Bikram Sambat calendar, this festival i.e. Tihar begins with Kaag Tihar and ends with Bhai Tika in Dwitiya of Kartik Shukla Paksha every year.

As we know, Tihar is the second popular festival after Dashain of Nepal. Nepalese peoples celebrate this festival willingly and interestingly likewise Dashain. Deepawali is taken to be of huge importance as it demonstrates contribution to not just only for the humans and the gods, but also for the animals such as crows, cows, and dogs which sustains a never ending relationship with humans.

People draw different kinds of patterns on the floor of living rooms, in courtyards, in gardens as well as in front of house using various materials like rice, colors, flower, flour, sand or petals of flowers too .Mostly, it is called as Rangoli. Rangoli is meant to be a holy welcoming spot for the Gods along with Goddesses of Hinduism primarily Goddess Laxmi i.e. known as goddess of wealth.

The first day of Tihar is Kaag Tihar and the following day i.e. second day of Tihar is known to be kukur Tihar.

Here, kukur denotes dog. On this day, peoples treat as well as worships dogs with the help of garlands, tika along with delicious food and praise the loved relationship between humans and dogs. It is a fact that, Dogs take up a very special position in Hindu mythology.

So in almost every home as well as in streets they get special treatment in this day in contrary of other days. As mentioned in the Mahabharata, Bhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, had a dog as Bahan.

Yam raj, also known as the god of death, is assumed to own two security dogs – each dog containing four eyes. The dogs are said to watch over the gates of hell. Due to this faith, this day is as well worshipped as Naraka Chaturdashi.

Dogs are especially important to Nepal’s Hindu practitioners. During day two of Tihar, Kukur Tihar, and the role of dogs in human life and throughout history are celebrated. In the Rig-Veda, one of Hinduism’s most ancient texts, Samara — the mother of dogs — assists Indra, the ruler of heaven, in retrieving stolen cattle.

As per the Hindu tradition, it is assumed that dog is the guardian as well as messenger of go Yama, the lord and judge of the dead. A dog is also assumed to be the protector of the gates of the life after death.

At the end of the Mahabharata, the king of honesty, Yudhishthira, rejects to go into paradise without his loyal dog. The dog is revealed to represent the concept of dharma, the path of righteousness.

During the time of Tihar, each day is used for honoring either a numerous concept or bodies such as crows, dogs, cows, oxen, and fraternal relationships, respectively. On the second day of Tihar i.e. Kukur Tihar, each and every dogs are accepted, pleased, as well as worshiped.

What forms does this worship take? During Kukur Tihar, the mythological and real relationships between humans and dogs constitute the day’s major focus. A garland of flowers is draped around the neck of every dog; not only those with homes, but strays as well.

In the day of kukur Tihar, you’ll notice a wreath of flowers hanging around the neck of each dog. This floral necklace, called a mala, is a mark of respect and dignity. It announces the wearer as important, and symbolizes the prayers that go with the dog.

On the day of Kukur Tihar, a circle shaped red mark is made in the forehead of each and every dog. In Nepal, this mark is called the tika, a paste made from a red dye powder known as “Abir” — along with rice and yogurt. The tika is applied in a single stroke on the forehead upward from the eyes.

Like the mala that garlands the neck, the red tika marks the dog as both a devotee of the righteous path and as an object of devotion. The tika imbues the dog with an air of sacredness and acts as a blessing to those who encounter the dog during Kukur Tihar.

Prayers, decoration along with flowers without any doubt are very nice, however as far as dogs are interested, their favorite part of Kukur Tihar must be the food. On the first day of Diwali, Kaag Tihar, food is arrayed on the roofs of homes as offerings to crows.

On the second day of Tihar, sweets and foods offerings are kept outside for dogs in the home, and even for the strays in the streets. These food offerings take a variety of forms.

The dog’s treats may include milk, eggs, meat, or high-quality dog food depending on the wish and desire of celebrant. Most of the people may also present dogs a small piece of sel roti, a deep-fried confection which looks and taste same as a donut. This is a day in the year when the dogs have the most excellent of almost the whole thing.

This is an extremely widely known idea as well as very broad summary of Kukur Tihar. While its origins are traced to Nepalese Hinduism, variants of the day of the dog are celebrated by denominations of Hinduism and Buddhism across the world.

In kukur Tihar people worship and thanks dogs for all of their aspects such as: as a guardian, as a companion, and as a friend as well. By devoting days during the festival of lights to crows, cows, dogs, oxen, and siblings, adherents acknowledge the deep connections between all the living things.
