Lord Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura. His parents were Devaki and Vasudeva. At that time, a cruel king ruled the kingdom. People believe Lord Krishna was born to protect good people and guide them on the right path.

Even though he was born in a prison, he was safely taken to Gokul. There he grew up happily and became famous for his miracles and loving heart.

How We Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami

On this special day, people clean and decorate their homes and temples with flowers and bright lights. Many devotees keep a fast and pray to Lord Krishna.

At midnight, people sing devotional songs and celebrate Krishna’s birth with great joy. Temples are filled with music and devotion.

Children dress up as little Krishna and Radha. They wear colorful clothes and peacock feathers. In many places, people celebrate Dahi Handi, where teams form a pyramid to break a pot filled with butter.
