Kaag Tihar: a festival dedicated to crows: – Although Nepal is often criticized for massive sacrifices of birds and animals during various cultural ceremonies, Kaag Tihar stands out among all such rituals.
The word “Kaag” is a Nepali word meaning a crow. Kaag Tihar is one of those days dedicated to worshipping crows as a part of the second largest festival of Nepal i.e. Tihar/Yama Panchak/Deepawali. Tihar is celebrated in the month of November every year and is identified as the ‘festival of lights.’
Religious significance of Kag Tihar
Kaag Tihar is the first day of the festival wherein crows are worshipped as the messengers of Yama, the God of death. Those are offered with sweets, breads, grains and other dishes placed on the roofs of people’s houses. The crow is believed to deliver news to the people as underlined in Hindu scriptures and writings.
The flight of crows towards North was considered as a signal of peril, towards West was regarded as a sign of grief, towards East was believed as an implication of triumph and North as a symbol of glory.
Thus, worshipping crows on this day is expected to please the crows thereby bringing good news only. The major purpose behind the ritual is to eliminate any sort of grief or death in the family.
Besides traditional standpoints, the crows also play a vital role in the lives of Nepalese people given the fact that agriculture is a chief occupation of majority population in Nepal.
Crows help the farmers by munching the bugs and saving the crops. Thus, this ceremony of worshipping the crows is also to be taken as a reflection of people’s gratitude towards the crows.
A very interesting instance during the earthquake of 2015 in Nepal may also be referred here. The cawing of crows was compared to an early disaster warning system by many people. The cawing of crows was heard before the earthquake as well as during aftershocks.
This enabled many people to get out of their houses and take resort to a safer place. And, this instance clearly adds to the rationale behind people worshipping these crows.
Forms of Celebrations
Gathering around Kageshwori Mahadev Temple
Kageshwori Mahadev Temple is the ultimate destination for most people to celebrate Kaag Tihar. It is located in the north-eastern belt of Kathmandu valley.
The temple presents a brass idol of crow that weighs 227 kilograms. The idol was built at the cost of NRs. 1.3 million. Devotees gather in the temple to worship the idol to mark the festival.
Most of us may not be aware about this conference. It has been consistently organized for 15 years now. Ramesh Dulal from Ilam gathers flocks of crows in a specific location by producing their sounds.
The last conference was held by the Music Association of Nepal in Ratna Park, Kathmandu. Around 300 crows had been gathered during that conference.
Worshipping crows at homes
Not all devotees gather in the Kageshwori Mahadev Temple and worship the idol of the crow. Some people prefer keeping sweet foods and delicacies on the roof tops of their houses.
Once crows gather round the foods, the devotees worship the crows. Even various non-Hindu families have begun observing this ceremony from past few years.
A unique festival in the world
Of multiple categories of festivals and celebrations around the world, Kaag Tihar is a unique one. It outstands for its sense of honor and gratefulness towards the existence of crows in the environment.
A symbol of family well-being
Kaag Tihar holds an emotional significance in Nepalese families bound by the principles of togetherness and mutual care. This festival is a symbol of how each member prays for the well-being of the entire family as the pleasing of crows is intended to invite good luck to the family.
A mark of respect towards other creatures on planet
If we are to focus on the other aspects of the festival, it is apparently observable that Kaag Tihar also portrays the respect of Hindus towards the essence of other creatures on earth. The festival is a picture of how other creatures have also prominent roles to play in the environment.
An optimistic standpoint
Although crows and their cawing are mythologically perceived as an omen, the worshipping of these crows in order to generate positive news depicts an optimistic standpoint of Hindu devotees towards evil and negativity.
A message that gods need not be sought in stones and idols
When assessed from an objective lens, this practice is praiseworthy in the sense that it challenges a materialistic perspective that seeks for faith in temples, idols and stones.
This festival protrudes a positive message that living beings can be worshipped too as a vital part of the nature. Any living object that helps humans in so many ways can be thanked by visualizing their image as of God.
In this way, Kaag Tihar is an intriguing festival observed by Hindus in Nepal that demarcates the beginning of Yamapanchak. The festival stands as a symbol of human gratitude towards crows for their ecological assistance. It is celebrated with an intention to encourage the crows to bring good news only. Also, this festival aims to ensure safety of one’s own family.
As a matter of fact, an essential lesson can be learnt from this festival. Unlike other festivals wherein animals and birds are sacrificed in the name of gods, this festival honors the existence of birds in the environment.
This festival teaches us how every creature on planet has a significant impact in our daily lives and how those are to be treated with respect for their functions. If cruel practices of sacrificing animals and birds during various ceremonies are abolished, this festival can be fairly referred to by other countries in the world as an inspiring ritual.
