What Are Pearls? How Do They Form?

Pearls are complex, shiny objects made from the soft tissue of shelled mussels like oysters or mussels. Mollusks secrete a fluid that covers the microscopic irritant when it becomes trapped in their mantle fold. This coating is applied layer after layer until the annoyance becomes a pearl.

The History and Use of Pearls

Since thousands of years ago, pearls have been used as jewelry and on clothing by royalty. Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, also used pearl powder in her beauty regimen. Divers would take pearls from the oceans and seas and manually pull oysters from river bottoms or ocean floors. They then checked each oyster for pearls. Not all mollusks produce pearls, either. Only three to four oysters can make pearls in a three-ton haul.

Cultured Pearls vs. Natural Pearls

Cultured pearls, on the other hand, are pearls created by adding an irritant to the shell, such as a tiny bead. The process of creating pearls is the same as natural pearls. In cultured pearls, layers of nacre are formed around the irritant to make the pearl.

Freshwater pearls vs. saltwater pearls

You can find freshwater pearls in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Although freshwater pearls are usually white, they can also be found in pastel colors like pink or gold. The most popular freshwater pearl shapes include teardrop, oval, and round.

Saltwater pearls can be found in Australia and Asia. There are three saltwater pearls available: South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls. When a mollusk in a saltwater oyster shell is placed in cultured saltwater pearls, they are grown in saltwater. These pearls are 8mm to 18mm wide.

Because they require more effort to cultivate, saltwater pearls are more valuable than freshwater pearls. Saltwater oysters only produce one pearl daily, while freshwater oysters can grow as many as 30 pearls simultaneously.

Why Freshwater Pearls?

While freshwater pearls are less expensive than their saltwater counterparts in price, they offer a lot of beauty and luster, as well as an added touch of class and sophistication. Many freshwater pearls come in many colors and shapes. They can be crafted into jewelry designs and modern designs. These pearls are versatile and will bring joy to many people. Coco Chanel said that pearls are precious and girls should have diamonds, but pearls can make them shine like moonlight.

How to Care for Pearl Jewelry

You should take out your pearl jewelry before you shower or swim and avoid contact with harsh chemicals like perfume, hair spray, detergents, etc. You can clean your pearl jewelry after it has been worn by wiping it with a damp cloth and putting it back in its box. Keep your pearl jewelry separate from other jewelry. You should not clean pearls with ultrasonic cleaners. Keep in mind that pearls are porous gemstones. Wear them often to avoid them drying out.
