Among the Newa of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, Dashain traditionally called Mohani is celebrated as the most important festival of Nepal Sambat calendar year.

In the society of the Hindus and Newars, it is celebrated with just small slight changes and interpretations, where each nine days Navaratri leading up to the 10th day called ‘Dashami’ carry special importance.

The goddesses Durga as well as her different manifestations are specially worshiped by Hindu Newars throughout the Shaktipeeths of Kathmandu Valley.

Among Newari peoples, Mohani is also significant for its importance on family gatherings as well as on a renewal of community ties, highlighted by special family dinners called Nakhtya and various community processions of deities called Jatra throughout the three cities of Kathmandu Valley.

On Dashain festival of Nepal, many young people gather around a wooden swing wait for their turn to get a chance to swing on during Dashain festival. Dashain festival is one of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated in Nepal.

The swing is locally very popular form of obtaining fun during the festival period. Swings are made in almost all regions of Nepal as a means of celebration and form of entertainments. They are called ‘ping’ in Nepali. A ping is made a week earlier than the day of Ghatasthapana. It is dismantled only after the festival of Tihar.

They are particularly famous between the kids, but nowadays adolescents and young people are also seen playing on the swings. For many the highlight of Dashain is the series of giant bamboo swings, or ping, which are assembled across the villages and in the town as well.

On Dashain festival of Nepal, Ping’s can be seen in almost all over the places of country Nepal. In Dashain, Ping is played by the almost all Nepali residents regardless of age, gender, race etc.

Taking a swing on the ping is said to take away ill feelings and make younger the swingers, even though it is something which is not recommended for those who have an aversion to the greater heights. In the festival of Dashain, the tower sized “Ping” is not just only a means of fun. However, playing ping is also a platform for every person to perform extra activities. It enables peoples to gather together and enjoy the glorious as well as hilarious moment with one another.

While playing the ping please, be aware and make everyone aware of the likely dangers and remind everyone that safety comes at first. While enjoying and having fun don’t ever neglect safety issues at all.

Without proper supervision don’t allow your children to play pings. Please restrict your children from playing pings, which are made in the middle of roads and highways because sometimes the accident might occur and collision is possible between the vehicles and swingers too.

When plying ping, make sure that your children use open grounds and field areas where vehicle flow is low. Furthermore, please consider all the safety measures before playing the ping.

Let’s together free our mind and have fun by playing ping and let’s recreate our memories of early days i.e. of childhood.  So, together, let’s widen the significance of friendship at the same time lets give continuation to our old tradition unforgettable culture.

Dashain is the best as well as the most favorable festival in the Bikram Sambat calendar and Nepal Sambat annual calendar, celebrated by Nepalese people, along with their separated relatives and family members throughout the world.

It is the most celebrated festival in the countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, and North Indian hills. People go back to their house from all parts of the world, as well as various parts of the country, to enjoy the festival jointly. All government offices, educational institutions as well as other private offices remain closed during the festival time.

This festival lies either in September or October, beginning from the shukla paksha (bright lunar fortnight) of the month of Ashwin and ending on Purnima, the full moon. In Nepal, Dashain is celebrated for about 15 days and among these the most significant days are the first, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and the fifteenth only.

However in this present time period, people living in the cities and town areas have their changed their way of living. This is because in Dashain festival people residing in the town areas can rarely enjoy the view of swinging and they cannot enjoy the swing easily because they just have to go far away from their home because due to the lack of open fields, they can’t find pings nearby them.

As we all know, to make swing, a piece of land approximately like a small ground is needed which can mainly be found in the village areas. But in cities, to tell the truth, due to increase in the modernization, industrialization and construction of new buildings rapidly there are no open grounds at all.

So finding that kind of open field in Kathmandu city is almost impossible nowadays. From the ancient time, our old generation used to enjoy Dashain by swinging too but as per the change in the time new generations are forgetting significance of swinging in Dashain and now they almost don’t give any importance to swing.
