Time waits for no one. That’s certainly accurate when you’re talking about running a business. Being on time isn’t good enough. If you aren’t ahead of the game, that means you’re already behind.
Luckily, the arrival of a new calendar year is the perfect time for a fresh start. While it’s a solid practice to take advantage of its inherent sense of renewal, that may not be enough. Planning now for what happens on the first day of business in 2024 is a far smarter strategy.

Take stock of what you can improve. Then make some resolutions and stick to them. Here are a few ways your business can hit the ground running when you open your doors in the new year.
1. Motivate and Unify Your Organization Now
Everyone lacks motivation from time to time. When one employee begins to demonstrate apathy, it’s easy for others to fall into the same trap. Once that begins to occur, discord and disarray can follow.
Motivation is lost when employees don’t see the value of what they do or don’t believe they can do their job. They may not be able to grasp why they’re struggling. Or they may be dealing with emotional issues that make everything — including their jobs — difficult.
As a leader, it’s your job to inspire enthusiasm among your employees and unify them in a common cause. That’s where strategic alignment comes into play. Do this well, and your employees will be motivated and engaged in the work of achieving company goals.
Strategic alignment requires that leaders clearly communicate what those goals are. Then they ensure that individual employees truly understand how what they do is necessary to achieve them. That way, employees get the big picture and see themselves in it.
Motivated employees all working toward the same end can’t help but be productive. Sure, you’ll need to invest some time and effort in a top-down strategy alignment initiative. But if everyone shows up in 2024 understanding their roles, they’ll be ready to work together for the common good.
2. Upgrade Your Marketing Strategies
Repetition in an ad makes the point you want to convey memorable, and that’s a good thing. Merely repeating the same marketing efforts year after year is not. Before 2024, you probably need to kick your strategies up a notch.
When was the last time you audited your website and social media accounts? Have you updated your content to reflect current trends and topics? Have you strategized ways to move the needle on your search engine optimization goals? Are you asking those in your target audience what they want and using their comments to drive change?
Marketing plans must not be set in proverbial stone. Goals should be set, monitored, and revised as needed. Efforts that aren’t panning out should be adjusted or tossed out completely. And in a world that changes as fast as it does now, you should always be looking for the next opportunity to grow your brand.
Before 2024 gets here, take a close look at your brand and determine whether your current marketing strategies align with it. Moreover, make sure the customers you’re targeting are a good match for your brand. If they aren’t, one or the other needs to change.
A new year brings new opportunities for achieving greater success for your business. Autopsy your 2023 marketing plan and update it accordingly. That way, you will be setting your business up for that success.
3. Set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal
Of course, your company has goals you want it to achieve. Those are the ones you will use to motivate your employees in your strategic alignment efforts. They could be routine milestones or major objectives, scheduled for achievement in varying lengths of time. But does your business have a big hairy audacious goal (BHAG)?
The BHAG is a concept coined by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their book “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.” BHAGs are designed to make companies visionaries, not merely successful. A BHAG can galvanize stakeholders to do what they can to achieve a massive vision somewhere in the distant future.
Think about NASA’s goal to land a man on the moon. Or consider Google’s quest to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Those are two examples of BHAGs that people could rally around and get excited about.
The secret to setting a BHAG for your business is to find that sweet spot between the impossible and the might-just-be-possible. Your goal may be to launch a service that disrupts your industry or a technology that addresses a major global problem. It may be an externally oriented target or an internally transformative one.
Whatever BHAG you set, it needs to be something that excites your employees. After all, the work they do is the only way your business stands a chance of ever reaching it. In the meantime, the journey should be fun for everyone.
Ring In the New Year Right
Business as usual should be a non-starter as your company enters 2024. With a little planning now, you can ring in the new year at top speed.
Align your organization strategically, build a winning marketing strategy, and rally everyone around a BHAG. Then go out and make it your business’s best year yet.
