Why do arranged marriages occur in Nepal?
Arranged marriages are much popular in eastern culture. In the case of Nepal, such marriages are the only acceptable way of marriage among the higher castes. Marriage, rather than being a personal affair between two individuals, is a social affair in Nepal.
All of the family and society has to come together and fix a marriage between two individuals. In this case, there are many things one need to take care of. Things like the difference in religion, caste, and class can cause a lot of problems in the family.
That is why everyone in society come together when marriage is about to happen in order to make sure everything is followed through and that it is the best match possible. Given below are a few of the reasons why arranged marriages are still the preferred way of marriage in Nepal:
Arranged marriage is the traditional way of marriage
From times immemorial, arranged marriage has been the only way of marriage in Nepal. Everyone in the family married the match arranged to them by their family. In such circumstances, they do not even know about any other type of marriage.
Love marriage is frowned upon and is not accepted by the society at any cost. As a way of following the old culture and tradition, a way of marriage is still followed in the same way.

When each person in the family is trying to make sure the match is perfect and that there will be no surprises or unwanted things happening in the future, it will definitely be a good match.
That is the reason, the rate of divorce in Nepal where arranged marriage is still performed is very low compared to any other countries where love marriage is preferred.
Arranged Marriage helps keep families together
Arranged marriage happen only when families come together and are perfectly ok with the conditions of each other. This kind of marriage keeps in mind things like social class, social standing and family background. This way, families will be close to each other and will keep in touch with each other.
In case of love marriages, two individuals might be close together but there is no guarantee that families will accept it and will be cordial towards each other. That is why those who do arrange marriages are more secured socially and culturally.
Arranged Marriages are the only kind of marriage that is socially acceptable
The social structure of Nepali people is such that only arranged marriages are accepted. In today’s world also, where individuality is respected and personal preference is valued in the western world, Nepal is still working on the traditional ways of living.
Society does not accept love marriages. And when society does not approve or accept, living in this kind of society for those who choose their own life partners becomes very complicated. Choosing your own life partner feels like a sin committed against the society and because of this, nobody dares to do such a feat.
In the fear of society, even those who want to spend their life together have to give away their own happiness for the sake of family and society. There are many cases where because of the opposition by the family and society, couples have retreated to leaving their families altogether or in extreme cases, even committing suicide.
Arranged Marriages have been proven to be more successful
If we look at the statistics, arranged marriages have been seen to work out better than love marriages. Not only in Nepal, but this condition is also true to any country in the world. The rate of divorce in Nepal is very very low because of arranged marriage.
If we compare the divorce rates with the western countries, we can see that it is very high there because of the culture of love marriage. When it comes to arranged marriages, the society keeps pressure and also supports them so that they can work out through little issues.
Whereas, in the west, the concept of compromise is unheard of. Nobody wants to compromise for the sake of marriage and social support is also not that readily available.
So, internationally too, arranged marriages seem to have done a better job at keeping couples and families together as compared to love marriages. That could be one of the reasons why arranged marriage is so successful and hence popular in Nepal.
