Nepali New Year Traditions, Customs, and Activities
Nepali New Year celebration comes with starting of Basant Ritu (season). In this season, the environment is so clean and new blossoms can be seen in trees. On this day, people do various joyful activities such as Family gatherings, Parties, going to concerts, Visiting Relative’s homes, and so on. Nepal is a Hindu country and most of the people believe in religion. The religious person or family goes to the temple early in the morning.
They visit many religious places, bathe in a pond, pray the god and offer the puja for a good start to the year. Pilgrimage visits various religious places like Pashupati in Kathmandu, Devghat in Chitwan, Gosaikunda in Rasuwa, Tribeni in Nawalparasi, etc.
Similarly, Adults spend time with their friends going to film halls, visiting new places, and concerts. It is believed that if our new year is full of happiness then, other days of the year will be better.
So, people choose this day to start a business. People make the New year better than others by visiting orphanage home and old age homes by spending time with old aged and orphan children. They distribute food, and clothes among them.
The new year is the day which exuberant us. In Nepalese society, many delicious foods were cooked in the house like Nepali Rotis, food. They play cards at home with their family or friends. A lover can date in a romantic place or can go for a long drive.
From the month of Baisakh, the new session of the curriculum of school students starts. Students get new books, dresses, and study materials. Children become excited to study in the new classes.
Also in Bhaktapur, there is a celebration of biscuit Jatra. Bisketjatra is an annual event celebrated at the start of the New year in Bhaktapur, Dhapasi, and Tokha.
Different areas of Bhaktapur celebrate this festival but the most eventful places are BhaktapurDarbar Square and ThimiBalkumari. It is the festival celebrated by the Newar community of Bhaktapur which is regarded to be the ‘festival after the death of the serpent’.
A month earlier, the chariot is congregated near the Nyatpole temple. On the day of the New year, the chariot carrying the statue of God Bhairav is pulled by a huge number of people to the Khalnatole.
Each team pulls the chariot to their side but the chariot heads towards Khalnatole later. A huge Yoshi (Lingo) about the length of 25 meters is erected in the stone called yoni (female Genital) base. On the evening of New Year, Yoshi is pulled down as the New Year starts.
Juju Bhai Shrestha is the most renowned and frequent tongue pierced in the town who pierce the tongue in biscuit jatra every year. But from this year, jujubhai is said to stop tongue piercing in biscuit Jatra and motivate the new generation to involve in tongue piercing to continue the tradition.
Also, I n Balkumarithimi, there is a celebration of sindur Jatra (color Festival). Folks from various parts of Madhyapur Thimi carrying their chariots gather in LayekuThimi. People celebrate and share greeting on the shoulder. The Nepalese celebrate spring and a new year by throwing vermilion powder over each other. They play Dhimay music as well.
So, in the New year, we should give our full time to family, friends, or lovers. On this day, the office, and school get closed and we will get sufficient time and we can do whatever we like.
The New year brings happiness everywhere. If we are not touched with someone who is not talking anymore because of some personal problem, In this day we should forget all the personal issues with him/her and we can start our relationship again.
