The emperor Vikramaditya officially declared Baishakh 1 to be a Nepali New Year in 57 B.C. People began Nepali New Year celebrations on Baishakh 1 after many years. They ritualized the beginning of the year by acting and re-enacting the world of the past before peace proliferated. People learned Baishakh as first month of the year and with this the tradition of following Nepali lunar calendar.

The Nepali custom celebrates their religious merriments on a varying date because it is based on the lunar calendar as opposed to their national holidays that are observed on fixed dates.

The Nepali New Year or the Navavarsha according to the locals is a religious holiday celebrated with great significance and is observed with deep respect and devotion. Just like many other countries, they commemorate the event with the hopes of having a lot of blessings and prosperity as they face the New Year.

Bikram Samvat Calendar

The origin of Nepali New Year relates to the legendary Hindu King Vikramaditya in 57 BC.  Vikram Sambat or Vikram’s Era is the calendar established by emperor Vikramaditya. It uses lunar months and solar sidereal year. It is the official calendar of south Asian country Nepal. Vikram Samvat is also termed Bikram Sambat, but is computed using the tropical year.

The Vikrama Samvat (V.S. or B.S.) is said to have been founded by the emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain following his victory over the Sakas in 56 BC. It is a lunar calendar based on ancient Hindu tradition. The Vikram Samvat calendar is 56.7 years ahead (in count) of the solar Gregorian calendar.

Bikram Sambat is the glory of Nepal. We the Nepalese people are lucky because Nepal was never captured by foreign imperialists.
