Dashain is the symbol of victory of the gods and goddesses over demons. It falls in autumn – in the month of either September or October every year. This festival is also known as Bada Dashain, Durga Puja, Dussehra, Kali Puja and Bijaya Dashami.
The first day of the festival is called “Ghatasthapana” when people sow seeds of corn, wheat, and barley. Similarly, Fulpati is a major celebration occurring on the seventh day. The eighth day is ‘Maha Asthami’ and the ninth day is Maha-Nawami which is also the last day of Navaratri. Hundreds of goats, sheep, and Buffaloes are sacrificed at the mother goddess temples on the eight days of the festival. The tenth day is the ‘Dashami’, on this day, we take Tika and Jamara from the elders and receive their blessings. People visit their elders’ home and get tika from them while younger ones come to the home to receive blessings .from elders importance of Dashain is ever increasing as family members from far off and distant relatives come for a visit as well as to participate in the function which continues for four days. The government offices, schools, and other offices remain closed during the festival.

As we know that Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti, Nepal is the authorized entrusted body for bringing out Nepali calendar. It is informed that best and auspicious time for receiving Dashain Tika is 11.55 am. Senior astrologer, culture expert and religious people informed us that about the best time for tika or best time to put tika is 11.55 in the morning. But the suitable time for Vijaya Dashami time will 700 AM and 11:55 AM. So, दशैंको टिकाको साइत is 11.30 AM in the morning. He also added that best time or auspicious time for Ghatasthapana is 10.45 am.

Tika and jamara are one of the important parts of Dashain. We can probably see much Nepalese with a forehead covered with tika’ throughout the country. Dashain tika which is a mixture of a red pigment and an uncooked rice. Before we go into detail about the topic, why don’t we have a little information about Dashain?
We all know Dashain is the most awaited festival of Nepal as it is the biggest occasion among all others. We all know what Dashain is. Dashain is that time of the year when our houses and environment looks new and fresh, the only time in a year when playing swings feels better than ever. The time when we can see all Nepalese celebrating together with their families; eating, drinking, playing cards, flying cards and so on but more of celebrating together with family and relatives with a full-on cheer throughout the festival. What is a tika?
A tika is a red pigment. There are tikas of different colors that are put accordingly. The different colors like red, yellow, white etc. Normally, the color of any tika is red except for some. The red color is the most common color of tika and used during many occasions/ festival.
Dashain tika is a mixture of red pigment and rice (uncooked). It is usually put along with jamara during the period of Dashain. Dashain tika is one of the important parts of the festival. We can already see the excitement before the festival starts. The ones who are living in abroad set to leave for Nepal to their families while people living in different places through Nepal return back to their hometown to celebrate with their family and if you ask any of them about it then one if their many answers may be for tika and jamara and get blessing from their senior family members and relatives. Yes! Many of us Nepali, we visit our relatives for tika and jamara.
Our elders put on tika on our forehead as it is one of the rituals and more importantly for their blessings and blessings of Goddess Durga for sure. History says that the great battle between Goddess Durga and the evil Mahisassur lasted for 10 days when the good beat the evil ( .i.e Goddess Durga slew Mahisassur to death on the 10th day). The remaining 5 days are the days Goddess Durga celebrated her victory.
So the 10th day, the day of victory is the day when the elder most member of our family puts on tika on our forehead and bless us and it is also believed that along with the blessing of our elders, Goddess Durga will also bless us with our healthy life in the future. Jamara which is planted at the first day for next 9 days are plucked on the 10th day which is also believed to be blessed by Goddess Durga is put along with the tika for which we call it tika and jamara together.
When is Dashain tika put on?
Dashain tika is put on by our elders on the 10th day of the festival along with the jamara. The 10th day which is also called Vijaya Dashami. The tradition lasts for remaining 5 days. Some with more relatives also go beyond the 5 days for tika and jamara. The remaining 5 days are the days when we go to all of our relatives for the tika and jamara and get the blessings of our seniors. Also, we get Dakshina along with tika and jamara which makes this tradition even more exciting and interesting.
In a nutshell, Dashain tika is a special tika with a great importance in this biggest festival of Nepal. People start to get tika on their forehead from the 10th day to the remaining 5 days. They start to visit their relatives from the 10th day for tika and jamara. Jamra a 6-inch yellowish green seedling that is planted for 10 days away from sunlight is believed to have the blessing of Goddess Durga. Jamara is also equally important in this festival. Dashain tika is incomplete without jamara. They both come along.The Dashain tika is put on by the eldest family members to all with their blessings and also it is believed that putting on those tikas will bestow the blessings and protection of Goddess Durga as well.
